Samuel Jones Paper Mill, former owner of the Mill House

After checking with my stockbroker about shares rising, I had a visit from Mr Smith, the post card collector, and bought copies of old Paxton cards and later visited Cliff & Diana Robert’s house at the mill – Mill House- for a long evening chat about its historical connections to the Paper Mill. A further Sikh has died from injuries sustained in last Wednesday’s gun attack in Southall and Labour are trying to control the influence of left-wingers, and stop a Sinn Fein lecture

Laid tired in bed for a while and only then got up and showered, deciding to shampoo my hair before breakfast. Was late to the table again, though still had a chance to chat with the family. Read today’s paper, then called my Stockbroker. The Stock Exchange was recovering sharply this morning and rose all day, but I am advised that it is still a bear market and there will be other buying opportunities. It ended at about 1700 and had been as low as 1550 a little while ago. Had a visit this morning from Mr Trevor Smith, the post card collector. I gave him copies of his 13/14 cards that I had previously borrowed and then loaned his remaining 25 to get copies of afresh. This will cost a further £100 (£2.50 for the 1st and £1.50 for the second copies).

Later, I worked on my desk, clearing out the drawers and cleaning the surface, as both had become very cluttered as of late. Soon it was lunchtime, then I did some more tidying up, before having to take Debbie to her horse riding. Saw her safely up on Patchy’s back and then left to get ready for my next visit. Arrived at Cliff & Diana Robert’s house at the mill – Mill House – at 7.00pm and spent the next five hours chatting to them about such history as they knew, then displaying photographs so as to trace the house’s development. It had been a small ‘L’ shaped house to start with, as seen in mid 19thC lithographs. Then Bricknell, the Mill Manager, expanded it to be a residence as well as an office. Finally damaged superficially in the 1912 fire, it was further extended by adding a front section in 1913, as the mills were rebuilt. Copied some sections of the house deeds, but all related to post-war conveyances, then left after midnight, alas. The news today was of the Stock Exchange recovery and others rose too in Wall Street, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Australia. A further Sikh has died from injuries sustained in last Wednesday’s gun attack in Southall, but two men were arrested after the attack. As Labour are trying to control the influence of left-wingers, Ken Livingstone and another lost their seats on the coordinating committee. Also, with Kinnock visiting Ireland tomorrow, he has called upon Labour controlled Hackney Council to withdraw an invitation for a Sinn Fein speaker to address them. The Sri Lankan Parliament, amongst protests, has passed two Bills giving the Tamils limited autonomy. After torrential rain and wind, more of the same is expected
