The history of Brittains Furniture Store in St Neots
The history of Brittains Furniture Store in St Neots

A slow start to the day on a fine morning with light showers after yesterday’s thunderstorm which continued with an appointment with Dr Osborne our dentist for an examination, then coffee at Tooks and home for lunch. Sometime this afternoon printing out some 30 letters about Redlands and then delivering them by bike before working on the Lady later as Di took the Brownies on the butterfly walk as I went to history lecture about Britain’s furniture store. The USSR conference agrees plans for reform, London police crackdown on another London drug ring and we plan Daniella’s birthday party tomorrow.

Another month, but the activities are the same. Was slow to rise, slower to shower and shave and slower still to breakfast, which I ended up eating on my own. A fine morning, with light showers after yesterday’s thunderstorm. Spent time reading the newspaper and morning mail quickly and then out with Diana and Della to St Neots for a 9.00am appointment with Dr Osborne, our dentist, for an examination. No problems for either Di or me, but we both have to have an appointment with the hygienist to clean off some scale etc. Coffee at Tooks after and I do not like the rather strong coffee there, though it is like nectar to Di’s caffeine addiction. I tried to get my hair cut after, but, after waiting a half hour with an increasingly restless Daniella, I walked out and did a little shopping instead. Once Diana had finished at the supermarket, we went home and it was soon time for lunch. This afternoon, I heard from Redlands and so I typed up a form letter to send to all of the affected villagers and then used mail-merge to individually address letters to them – some 30 odd in all. Then the task of delivering them and, Diana being out in the Range Rover, I took Daniel's bike and delivered them in that way, which was quite a surprise and talking point in the village.

Later, I actually started work on The Lady, re-commissioning the bilge pump and sorting out the area below decks. I did this before and after a tea of salad rolls, as Di was taking the Brownies on the butterfly walk tonight. I drove off to Eynesbury Primary School and listened to a lecture on the history of the Brittains Furniture Store, given by Jim Brittain, which I found very interesting. Back home late and made later by the need to pick up a lot of broken glass fragments that were littering Willow Close. The news today is of the USSR conference agreeing plans for reform and such real openness and debate is a genuine development for Soviet Union affairs. Police have cracked down on another huge drug ring in London, but the drug trade and social habit still grow. The weather stayed dull, mild and breezy today and Diana hopes for a fine day tomorrow for Daniella’s birthday.
