The cruise ship City of Poros in Piraeus in June 1988

An enjoyable night at Godmanchester, with the children playing and me fishing before a misunderstanding with Di over coffee and cakes. Then cruising to Huntingdon where I attended a poorly-run HDC council meeting. Accounts of last night’s attack on a Greek cruise boat on the Aegean Ocean and all attempts to plug the leaking oil wells have so far been thwarted by the conditions and wind direction

Quite a good night’s sleep, though I did have to get up and make myself comfortable after getting myself ‘wound up’ in my sleeping bag with the zip underneath.  Our normal morning routine, made easier by the warmth of the morning sun, which was with us for much of the day. We called Daniel and Gary in for breakfast and enjoyed our meal and then the girls played on the Godmanchester riverside playground, until we all went shopping. I did a bit of fishing with the girls and caught a half dozen bleak/small dace and was relieved of £1 for the Godmanchester Angling and Fish Preservation Society by a zealous official. At the shops we all bought a book each and then I got into a bit of a misunderstanding with Diana. She wanted to go to the coffee shop and I came back with Debbie to the boat.

Whilst I had a game of cricket with the boys, Diana scoffed two large cakes, which act annoyed us both. Furthermore, Debbie left the books in the newsagent, which entailed another return trip. We set off on The Lady and locked through Godmanchester to Huntingdon. We then had lunch in the town centre, when I only allowed Diana two cups of coffee to make up for her earlier indiscretion. Back at the boat, more fishing for me, with a dace, rudd and roach or two – still tiddlers, but a better size. David Tomblin’s mother, Brenda, arrived to pick him up and we had tea in the boat, sending out a plate of bread and butter and jars of jam etc for Steve and Gary. After, I washed, shaved and changed, ready for my Council meeting and then left Di to get the girls washed and to bed, whilst I set off for Pathfinder House. A poor meeting, with the Chairman motoring through the agenda and little comment or contribution from the members, until a few inconsequential items at the end. The news tonight was of the details of last night’s terrorist attack on a Greek cruise boat on the Aegean Ocean. The attackers opened up with hand grenades and then machine guns, frightening people into panicking and jumping overboard. The terrorists had quickly fled overboard into the water to be collected by a speedboat. The bodies are coming very slowly from the vicinity of the Piper Alpha rig, with most still missing; all as the attempts to plug the leaking oil wells have so far been thwarted by the conditions and wind direction. The US Democratic candidate for the Presidential campaign, Michael Dukakis, has chosen Senator Roy Bentson of Texas as his Vice Presidential running mate. He brings efficiency in administration, political and regional balance and credibility, which the Rev Jessie Jackson would not have done.
