This evening to Hail Weston House as a family for a firework party with Nigel Smith and his family. Today was the start of the canvassing campaign for Derek Giles. I got up a little late at the same time as the family after a better night and had a breakfast of French toast before Daniel left for school. I got my box of past election material down from the loft and made up some canvassing instructions and window bills for Derek Giles. I was glad that I went over to help in this morning because I was the only one that did – with all the others calling in sick. I showed Derek the ropes and got him off to a good start for a couple of hours.

The weather was showery but fine with some sun whilst we were out. The response was very good. We do not have a lot of Liberal Democrat support in the evenings, but we were converting lots of personal and DOOM supporters to the cause. We canvassed some of the Great North Road together and Derek learned enough to go out by himself in the afternoon.

I was home in time for lunch and then I took Di and the girls to see Dad and Mum this afternoon. We found Dad’s sister, Ivy, and her family there and we quite filled the room. Poor Dad had been uncomfortable for a couple of nights, losing his dressing and making his head bleed. His face is also further swollen on that side and he seems so weak. I do not think he will last much above a week until he is bedridden. We did not stay so long today. It was nice, however, to see Mum much recovered from her back problems. Once home, we had a lightish tea and then afterwards there was a rest for me as I sat in front of the television writing my journal.

We went off to Hail Weston House as a family for a firework party with Nigel Smith and his family. He had some truly stupendous fireworks and I helped him to set them off. Then we had some supper and stayed late talking with Lynn and Nigel and his relatives before we got quite home late for the girls.

The news is of Mrs Thatcher saying that she might step down after the next election – but not before unfortunately. Another flood of thousands of East Germans fleeing to the West. There have been great typhoons in Thailand with more than 200 missing at sea from 20 missing vessels.
