Debbie aboard The Lady
Debbie aboard The Lady

A chilly start to the day for the girls to play on the nearby equipment and then for us to walk to Cambridge town centre to Eden Lily’s coffee shop after which the others went shopping and I went to the ‘Cambridge collection’ part of the library and researched information on the history of Banham’s and our Discovery craft, ‘The Lady’ which was built in 1968. The weather had become a little chilly and we cruised down the Cam and along the Old West River to the Twenty Pence Inn with our sliding cockpit forward and the weather kept out.

News of the IRA attacks on two British soldiers off duty in Germany and now of an attack by two Ulster Volunteer Force men. In South Africa, another attack by the security forces on Cape Town demonstrators

We all slept well and Daniel and I caught up on some of the sleep we had lost the other day. A bit chilly again this morning and the heating came into its own again. After breakfast in the morning routine, we walked together into Cambridge town centre. Girls at a high time playing on the nearby equipment and we all enjoyed the walk. We went to Eden Lily’s coffee shop before 10am but did not find Diana’s father, Mr Jackson there, and he must have decided not to come.

The others went shopping but I went to the ‘Cambridge collection’ part of the library and researched information on the history of Banham’s and our Discovery craft, ‘The Lady’. It was built in 1968 and first appeared in the 1969 Banham’s hire brochure as the first of its kind. It was to lead quite a revolution in comfort and convenience afloat. I got a few names of people involved in the project and might try to contact them to find out more when I get time. I took photographs of the most interesting parts and brought them to meet up with the rest of the family. We had a meal at the Wimpy and then another hour or so in Cambridge before it was time to go back to The Lady.

Even so, the girls had more time to play at the playground before setting off downstream. The weather had become a little chilly and we cruised down the Cam and along the Old West River with our sliding cockpit forward and the weather kept out. Several of us have our first colds of the season to come and are sniffling with sore throats. Di gave the children their tea as I cruised along and then gave me a rest and steered herself. I mused on the history of our own craft and what a revolution it must have been in its time. I think I’m going to keep it now! The children had a good game at the Twenty Pence Inn – all three of them including Daniel! Hide and seek was the order of the day. Diana and I had another nice dinner at the pub.
