The start of a two-day break from the boating, getting Daniel’s ‘A’-Level exam results and reviewing the work taking place at The Hayling View; sorting put a few problems that had arisen in our absence. Saddam orders US and British citizens in Kuwait to assemble at hotels.

I began a couple of days away from the boating holiday and drove back to Paxton with Daniel and Gary to sort some things out at home. It was time for Daniel's "A"-level GCE results to be notified to us and, after we had been through our morning routine and breakfast at Heronshaw in the morning morning, I tried calling Kimbolton School to see if they would give them to me. It was mid-day before they would give the results out and, when they came, they were a bit disappointing in view of the grades that the University of East Anglia had required in their offer. He obtained:- Physics C, Mathematics C and Chemistry E when the UEA offer was conditional on C-B-D respectively. This somewhat dampened proceedings as we set off soon after for home. We arrived in Little Paxton in mid-afternoon with the works to The Hayling View in full process.

The gas men were running around a bit lost, but I chatted with their supervisor and resolved the problems with him. I then telephoned the office fitters and arranged for them to come back the following day to complete the drilling of cable ducts etc. The kitchen was all in dust sheets with the ceiling repairs and redecoration, but my new office was looking very nice. I telephoned Joan and arranged to see her later in the evening and sat and typed up a letter of final warning for the gardener ready for an arranged interview in the morning. This, and sorting out much of the mess, took the remainder of the evening. I carried up the remnants of newly installed carpets and wallpaper up to the lofts and brought down much of the stuff intended for my office to give the heating installation team more room on the landings. Tired, Daniel and I dropped into bed in order to get up quite early in the morning before the workmen arrived. Saddam orders US and British citizens in Kuwait to assemble at hotels.
