The Kimbolton School Sports day with Della and Daniel on another really warm day meeting up with Nigel and Lynne Smith as Debbie goes horse-riding and finds an older girl to go on a hack with. Then to collect Debbie and go to the Little Paxton School fete where Di sells out of Brownies’ prizes and return home to save the bedding plants with some watering. Afterwards to watch England draw 0-0 with Holland in the World Cup and find that that the new gardener/handyman had accepted the job

Today was really warm and ideal for the events that were planned. It started for us quite early as Di had to take Daniel into ATS, in St Neots, to get his car's front tyres checked and wheels balanced before we dropped Debbie off to her horse-riding. We then went on with Della and Daniel to the Kimbolton sports day. It is always a fairly low-key affair with only the parents of participants attending but we went there to support the school and to meet Nigel and Lynne Smith. My Godson, Ashley Smith, was running and he did quite well by at least trying hard to come 4th in the 220m as his best attempt.

It was pleasant enough in the sun and Di actually got a little sunburnt, but I was well-covered and wearing a sun hat. We collected Debbie from the stables on the way home and was pleased to hear that she had found an older girl this morning to go on a hack with. Then to Little Paxton School in time for a salad lunch and the School Fete. We circulated around the school field patronising all of the stalls and then settled down to help at the Brownies' "Lucky Dip". This was very successful and the main problem for us was running out of girls' prizes and then we were finally sold out of the 200 prizes provided. We were persuaded to take over somebody else's cake stall and proceeded to sell most of their stock as well before the fete finished. It was rather a poor do really - few attractions in the arena and rather dull stalls.

The star attraction was the pony rides but then the Wood Green people always arrive late for this. We had tea of some of the cakes bought today and then I had to spend some time watering the flower beds to try to keep my bedding plants alive. Quite hot and tired from my day's exertions, and by now dressed in shorts and a "t-shirt", I settled down in front of the TV and watched England play well against Holland in the world cup and very nearly get the goal to beat them, but it ended as a 0-0 draw. We heard that the new gardener/handyman had accepted the job and would start at 9.00am on Monday which is good news.
