A quieter day in the office catching up before I could get back to laying out the next FOCUS newsletter as the rain poured down all morning. Then a little time outside raking leaves etc before attending a LibDem meeting at Sally’s this evening, with the emphasis on membership recruitment, where I also confided to colleagues that I might well not stand for re-election in 1992.

Home not too late to Di who had a very bad and depressing cold. The stock exchange is sliding again with the news that the US President and Congress cannot agree on a way to reduce the budget deficit

After a poor night for sleep, I had a much quieter day, catching up on necessary administration after hosting all of my visitors yesterday. I still had to take a number of telephone calls from the press and others and received a fax from the Onsite PR people to edit and approve. Then a lot of filing and sorting out of papers to do and the task of updating a couple of days journal before I could get back to the layout of the FOCUS newsletter. The day still started, as always, with my chores which are now wider and include sweeping up the host of leaves that are now falling. Squirrels are active amongst the oaks of our riverside garden collecting the acorns and they, as well as the wood pigeons and the wind, make sure that the leaves fall.

The weather is very mild again as yesterday but, unlike then, the rain poured down all morning. At least it was brighter this afternoon, making me wish I could be out there instead of being inside. Later, I did get out into the front garden, raking the leaves so that I would be able to do some mowing tomorrow. This was quite energetic stuff, but it is good for me to get the exercise anyway. Diana had to give me a lift to Sally's for the Liberal Democrat meeting this evening and Percy gave me a lift home. It was a reasonable meeting with me putting the emphasis on membership recruitment to underpin our electoral progress.

I have privately confided in Michael and Percy that I may well not stand again for the District when my term ends in 1992 and they are aware that we have to find somebody to take over in Little Paxton. We elected a new Membership Secretary and Agent now that Moira Biggins is leaving the area. Not too late home and a chat to Diana who is getting a very bad cold which is depressing her.
