The elected leader holds out against the massed strength of the Soviet army

Struggling to adjust from boating to office work on a hot and sunny day as we travelled to Cambridge for our rendezvous with Di’s parents and did a few things. The elected President of Russia holding out against the massed strength of the Soviet army so far and with a few tanks coming over to his side

It was a difficult day for me as I struggled to adjust from our holiday back to the normal working day. It was warm and sunny as well which did not really help as I would rather be fishing or cruising on my boat. I was up early again at Diana's behest and then worked urgently to finish our holiday photographic record so that I could lend it to Diana's parents. We were taking Della to them in Cambridge this morning so that they could look after her for a couple of days. Della helped me by sticking the photo-mounts on and we finished it in time to leave and get there by our meeting time of 10.00am at Eadon Lilley.

Di's mum was all right, if a little deaf after her recent cold, but Charles seemed gruff and irritable and not bearing his rheumatism very well at all. We had coffee together and then I left Diana to do some shopping whilst I took a walk along to the Fitzwilliam Museum which I had been meaning to visit for some time. It is a large and august institution but seems remote and academic in approach and not a bit friendly and interesting to the passing visitor or tourist. Even so, I enjoyed looking at the display of armour and ancient artifacts and would like to return one afternoon when the furniture and art sections are open. Lunch of roast beef at The Copper Kettle and then we drove back, stopping in St Neots to get some more chores done on the way.

I did not achieve very much this evening, but at least sorted out my "In-Tray" and listed the outstanding action items and so I should not have forgotten anything very important. The news of the Soviet crisis is of the elected President of Russia holding out against the massed strength of the Soviet army so far and with a few tanks coming over to his side. There have also been problems in the group that have mounted the coup as they have lost at least one of their number for "health reasons" which probably means a dispute over whether or not to use force to put down the civilian demonstrations that are now common in Moscow.
