Catching up in my office

A rather disappointing St Neots Carnival on another very hot and sunny day after which the girls swam in our pool and we enjoyed a family game of croquet on our Games Lawn. The news is of the escalating break-up of the Soviet Union with my concerns about increasing anarchy and the risk of a Yeltzin Russian dictatorship

Today was another very hot and sunny day which was nice for the final day of St Neots Carnival. After the normal chores this morning, I went down and mowed the games lawn and then set out the croquet game for later on. Before lunch, Della and I managed to have a little practice on it, and she became quite interested in the game. This afternoon, we took the Range Rover down to Priory Park and paid our £3 occupants’ admission to the carnival gala day. Debbie was soon aloft with Amy and Katherine Law in the trip helicopter, much to Della's disappointment, and the rest of us worked our way around the stalls.

It was too hot for enjoyment and Della soon became fretful, Diana succeeded in losing her purse for some time and then it was difficult to sit down because of the dog fouling everywhere. The rest of the attractions were a bit tame and so we decided to call it a day and came home. The girls went swimming with the Laws later and I washed the Rangie which was covered with a summer's insects and badly needed the attention. Later, after tea, we had a family game of croquet with Della and I beating Diana and Debbie and us all enjoying it. The girls are particularly keen, but Diana is not too happy about hitting one-another's balls with the ‘cannon’ move.

Darkness, by this time, and I sat and watched a TV film and went to bed a little late again. I had also watched the test match earlier and at least England seem set to win this though we seem unlikely to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. The news is of the escalating break-up of the Soviet Union and now I notice that others are beginning to share my concerns about increasing anarchy and the risk of a Yeltzin Russian dictatorship. Solving the potential border and nationality issues between the republics will be like treading a minefield with possibly no safe way out.
