Sam kept 'catching' and chewing discarded paper on his walks

Settling Sam into Horning and combining free ranging sessions with time under close control. Then to Stalham for an abortive journey to collect a replacement stair banister ‘ball’ before back to Wroxham for food shopping.

Then enjoying fresh herrings after undertaking more ground clearance before a phone catch up with Di and Della later.

Sam was slow to settle last night but then slept through the night quite satisfactorily, waking a little early to mess in his run before I could get to him. It was another damp and misty day, with a light drizzle drifting around in the air and wetting everything all day. I took Sam for a controlled walk by the marina this morning; let him have a free-ranging run on the Crabbett's Marsh saw-dust road at lunchtime and then a lead-controlled pavement walk this evening.

He was not quite as steady as he had been back in Paxton because of his excitement at being back in Horning; but he was not too bad. His most annoying habit is picking up pieces of paper, particularly tissue, and then eating them! I can stop him if I see him about to do it and can get the paper out of his mouth in time but he still eats them when I am not looking. The pity is that people are so messy and irresponsible by casting their rubbish around so but I still have to train him not to do it. I went to see Stalham Joinery to pick up another "ball" for our stairs but they had lost my sample and then I was disappointed when I got back to find that it was different to the others I had!

Then into Wroxham this morning and did my food shopping. As well as bread, milk etc, I bought some fresh local long-shore herrings from the fish shop and then gutted and grilled them this evening; grilling the soft roes onto some toast at the same time. It is good to eat these fish again as it seems to indicate that the herring is once again plentiful around the local shores after some years of absence.

I visited Alan Giddings this evening and returned his McDougal book, "Goose Fever", with thanks and found him working away in his garage as usual on a mini. He also had half a dozen wood pigeons hanging up there and so had been out last Saturday. Then, once I got back, I received a call from Diana who was wondering how I was getting on and also chatted to Della who went off to school all right today and seems fine. I am expecting to see Daniel tomorrow and hope for somewhat better weather.
