April Fools Day – A good joke played on Daniel and then some time cleaning algae from my pond until I had visits from Percy, Derek and Sally in turn with whom I edited and printed out their election Focus newsletters.
Debbie arrived back from her trip to Holland having really enjoyed it. The news continues about the Trafalgar Square Poll tax riot and another at the Strangeways Jail in Manchester with reports of up to 12 dead in the sexual offences wing
I was awake early today and started to get washed and dressed before Diana got up. I played a rotten joke on Daniel to make an April Fool of him whilst he was sitting in his dressing gown having breakfast. I told him that Debbie and Lisa (two old girl friends of his that are always pestering him) would be calling back in ten minutes to see him and he nearly had a fit! To my conservatory where I am pleased to see that my melon seeds have germinated but I found quite a lot of dead algae in the bottom of the pond and had to scoop some of it out later.

I spent this morning working on my journals, mail and other work and it was mild day but with some showers. A nice fried breakfast this morning which was much appreciated. This afternoon, I tackled the pond and got quite a bowl-full of sediment from the gravel at the bottom. Then Percy arrived and we spent the rest of the afternoon working on his second election leaflet. The trouble as that it was not presented in the form that I wanted and so we had to re-write most of it. My formula is that this yellow leaflet (with window bill and car sticker on the back) should emulate a newsletter reporting on matters brought up with us on the doorstep for best effect to show that we are actively visiting, and the others are not. Percy had just churned out copy on old issues that we thought of as important. All this took until teatime and then Derek Giles came over for an hour and got me to help him with the Eaton community newsletter until Sally arrived at 7.45pm! The rest of the evening laying out her copy. She had done the same thing as Percy and it was 10.30pm before we had finished it. During this time, Debbie arrived back early from her trip to Holland and was collected by Di. She really enjoyed the holiday and had brought me back a pair of clogs (in miniature) as a present! I relaxed in front of the TV for half an hour and then went to bed. The news is all about riots. First the Trafalgar Square Poll tax rally at the weekend where irate demonstrators tried to occupy Downing Street and then broke shop windows and looted the shops etc. This was bad enough for the authorities who have ordered enquiries but now there is a riot going on at Strangeways Jail in Manchester where prisoners are occupying many of the wings and holding hostages. There are reports of up to 12 dead in the sexual offences wing where such prisoners are normally kept segregated from the others for fear of reprisals which is part of the prison culture.
