As the builders resumed work on The Hayling View link building, I lit fire in my office and caught up on reading on a cold and snowy day set to get colder still. I held an afternoon ON-Site Board Meeting, tendered my resignation as non-executive Director and informed the Trustees of the sad outcome. Mum is keeping warm but worried about Freda’s leg, but Redgrave seems to be trading well.
Rising expectation of a ground offensive in the very uneven Gulf War but anti-Western sentiment is growing in Jordan with demonstrations against the bombing.
This morning, I got the builders started whilst Diana was called at short notice to help her sister-in-law in Sandy. The I lit the fire and caught up with some reading and my journal before lunch. It had been snowing and become bitterly cold but the forecasters are saying that it will get even colder in the days to come. I agreed to hold an On-Site Board Meeting this afternoon to consider what to do and tendered my resignation as I do not think that there is much to be done by non-executive directors now that things are so advanced. It was a sad event and the others are still prepared to soldier on with the support of the bank as long as it lasts. I wrote to the other trustees of the fund that invested in the company and explained the current situation. I also spoke to one of them and discussed it and he invited me to a social evening next month. The experience is all-to common these days and hardly raises an eyebrow.

Telephone calls also to my mother to find out how she was coping with the cold weather and I found that she was all right and quite snug and warm in her home. She told me of Freda's leg problems, and I hope that Freda will try to lose weight as it does not help her dilemma. At least she is still reporting that turnover is continuing to be more than £2000 per week which is quite good in this recession. Also had a call from Robin Martlew and arranged to go and see him next Monday evening. The builders made the brick piers to support the butler sink, fitted the door carcase and plastered the new walls. They will finish off the utility room tomorrow to allow the plumber to come on Friday.
News today from the Gulf is of rising speculation about a ground offensive and the allies undertake a full-scale practise on mock defences to get ready for the "big push". It seems a very un-equal war but we should not write off Saddam Hussein yet. Anti-Western sentiment is growing in Jordan where there are street demonstrations against the bombing of Iraq and in support of their cause. As tensions grow, so does the pressure on the Allied coalition Arab members.
