Public Relations day of Internal briefings before The Times Newspaper Interview and photo session, slotting in John Lamb’s appraisal and Barclays Bank securities in between
Up early and to the office to write up a long briefing to Comart Managers and Directors on the facts behind the recent publicity. The idea being to enable them to communicate well with the employees as a whole. A busy morning trying to get together the phone calls and arrangements to allow progress on BMMG and Comart group matters until The Times newspaper photographer arrives at 11.00am. Poorly prepared and unassisted, I nevertheless manage to get some super photographs taken which, if lucky, will appear in a Times personality profile for computer notables.

Early poorly-equipped train to London for Micro-Industry network standards cooperation talks and then back for Company Administration share schemes and executive appraisals
Up very early and to St Neots Station to catch the 6.57am London train. A rather sullen station crew open the ticket office late and I suspect that BR motivation is suffering the effects of recent cuts and ‘rationalisations’ of passenger services. A rather poorly-equipped train to London, but comfortable and arriving in time to allow a call to the office before my meeting with John Lamb and Graham Clifton of Transam on networking cooperation. Home by train and in late morning to review the mail and messages back at the office before a hectic afternoon of calls and problems.

Busy day reviewing Comart’s 3 year plans (which are looking good) as Diana and Debbie improve but Daniel gets worse on a colder day
Up early and to the office by 7.45. Then to adjust the buildings heat controls as per yesterday, assuming that from now on the facilities manager would be in control. Noticed also slipping standards of housekeeping and commented to the relevant managers during the day to seek the necessary improvements. Most concerned today with the formulation of a group three year plan for sales and profitability from which we can then extract the Comart company targets. In turn that information then gives us the levels of sales required for Comart’s existing Communicator range and the new Mozart range of micros. The results interesting and leading to a lot of work to put together our three year business plans in a form that we have not previously considered. They show the projected group turnover rising from £11.9M this year to £15M next and £20M in 1985/6; with net profit from £500K to £1M and £2 which is sufficient for a full listing.

Busy office day back after the holiday setting the office heating as the temperature drops and the family remain ill with me getting fed up of Diana’s four month sickness
Up early and, after a shower, to a breakfast of toast and fruit juice. Disappointment that Diana is even more ill and some frustration as I criticise her for making heavy weather of it all. Anyone else would also lose patience after four months of ‘incapacity.’ Off directly to the office and from 7 to 8am switching on and adjusting the building’s heating appliances and then formulating a policy for ensuring that the matter is attended to on subsequent occasions. A busy morning processing an enormous pile of mail and listing the priorities.

Comart Public Holiday stock checks as I review the mail and comfort Debbie on another very windy day as the Western Nations consider pulling out of Beirut
Up a little late but pleased to receive a newspaper for the first time this year. At last breakfast of toast and fruit juice and, after a wash and shave, to dress and make ready for a morning at the office. I arrive after 9.00am and although a Public Holiday, John Lamb and David Wood are in to do a half-yearly stock check. The offices cold after the seasonal break, a fan heater provides heat sufficient for me to sort out my papers against tomorrow and complete my personal expense claims for the months of November and December.
