Another tiring time working on Lady Martina after a family breakfast and then joining Daniel and friends in the swimming pool after he helps me with cleaning the tiles as Dr Wendy Savage is cleared of charges against her and pressure from all quarters is trained on Thatcher over South African sanctions

A troubled night, worrying about a silly dream and then restless in the early hours, driving Diana into the spare room. Showered and down to a nice breakfast of warm croissants, making sure that the children tidied up their rooms before they had theirs. Daniel off to his last morning at school this term and then I settled down to The Lady again.

A hard chore today. From sheer effort over the last couple of weeks of bending, kneeling and scraping, painting etc., I was really tired today, but still managed to sand down the work this morning and apply the last two coats of varnish this afternoon. I also glue down the trakmark on the other deck and do some filling with stopping where needed. Lastly, I applied some flexible sealant to the completed side, to try to stop any water from getting in in the future. I stopped for lunch with Di’s mum, who came so that Di could do her shopping this afternoon. Once Daniel was home, he helped me by cleaning the swimming pool tiles and I joined him and his friends in the pool after tea. Poor Clare and Heather both ended up the worst for wear tonight, as Clare hurt both big toes on the stones and Heather twisted her leg when being ducked. After a fine, but breezy day, it ended with a little drizzle tonight, but I just managed to get everything away and covered up in time. News today was of the clearance of Dr Wendy Savage, a consultant obstetrician, of all charges against her. She had held out against her profession, who disapproved of her natural childbirth methods that only used Cesareans as a last resort. Ex-minister, Leon Brittan, has spoken out in favour of economic sanctions and the EEC parliament has now called on all member states to implement them. Geoffrey Howe continues his meetings with Zimbabwe today and Mozambique tomorrow and their message is clear, but it is Thatcher that will have to listen. Two East Germans were convicted today of spying, though the evidence seemed very flimsy to me. Pop singer ‘Boy’ George is undergoing anti-drug therapy, under Dr Meg Patterson.
