On a very warm day, for the second day running and near record temperatures for October, I was up early again, off to Jewson’s to buy some timber and then welcomed Jeckells who quoted for a new canopy for Paxton Princess and a hood for The Jolly and then working all morning on the second side of the garage.
I stayed later as the weather was good and then called both Mum and Di on the car telephone and dropped in to see Mum at 8.00pm for an hour or so and we had a very good chat.
John Major was the hero at the Tory party conference for making the show better with his EMS timing but the Home Secretary was caught drinking and driving by the local police and now has to resign
I was awake early again and had breakfast and a bath before getting dressed. I was hoping that Jeckells would come later and so I popped out early to Jewson’s to get the timber that I wanted. I needed a piece of three by four-and-a-half inch timber to replace the bottom of the door-post and some more general timber for further work on the garage. Whilst at Jewson’s, I had a look at the saws and got myself another as my other one was going blunt. It is a "hard-point", which is a type of saw that is less-easily blunted but cannot be sharpened afterwards in this disposable society of ours! I was back by 9.00am and then worked all morning on the second side of the garage making good but slow progress. At midday, I went in for a pot of tea and some sandwiches and had just eaten them when the Jeckells man arrived.

We took off the canopy of the Paxton Princess and I showed him the way in which I wanted a new set of irons fashioned so that they folded neatly for'd and aft for choice. This done, we discussed the canopy design which is to have removable sides and a rolling back and more window panels for better visibility and ventilation. Then we went and looked at The Jolly and I got him to come down in price from £350 to £250 for a new spray hood for that if it was done at the same time and so I ordered that as well. I was pleased that this had been sorted out and then resumed work. I was intending to leave Horning around lunchtime but, as the weather was fine and suitable, and I was getting on well, I worked on and completed the front panels of the garage and re-hung the door that had previously collapsed on its hinges. I then put the cladding back on a temporary basis before tidying and packing everything up ready to leave. During the car journey home, I called both Mum and Di on the car telephone which is a very good use of my time.
I then dropped in to see Mum at 8.00pm for an hour or so and we had a very good chat. She appreciated the company and the chance to talk things over for a while. She is keeping all right, but the friends and neighbours that she has helping her are all suffering in their health. I think the truth is that she is wearing them all out! She has the local aquarists cleaning out the pond at the moment and the fish in a bathtub whilst the new water matures. The news today is of the Tory party conference where John Major is the hero of the hour for making the show better with his EMS timing. The villain is one of the environmental ministers who disgraced himself by being caught drinking and driving by the local police. This just after a tough speech on the same subject by the Home Secretary! The poor unfortunate now has to resign. The weather was very warm today for the second day running and near record temperatures for October.
