Hot and humid day for Little Paxton fete as Dan and I work on varnishing The Lady before and I watch TV afterwards and hear that Frank Bruno knocks out his US opponent in round 2 and the Treasury cuts finance for the NHS but safeguards spending for defence
The most uncomfortable day yet. Though the sun was only reasonably hot, it was so humid and hazy that it was most uncomfortable and difficult to do anything energetic. Early to The Lady, however, and first I sponged down the mahogany and then lightly sanded the surface to take the first of four coats of full gloss varnish, Daniel helped by scraping a patch that has deteriorated.
Diana was off to the corn merchant to purchase a sack each of chick crumbs and laying pellets for the ducks and collect the lawnmower after repair. After lunch on the lawn by the river, we go to Little Paxton Fete which I did not much enjoy in the heat with no shade. After buying a coconut from a boy who had won many, Daniel and I returned home early to escape the heat. I was rather upset when Daniel dropped and cracked the nut and lost the milk on the way home, but drank orange juice and ate a good proportion of it instead. I have recently been successful in losing weight, down from over 14 stone to only 13 stone 5. By the evening, The Lady was half varnished and the weather was fine enough for me to leave it out in the open. In late evening I watched some European athletics and our heavyweight prospect Bruno (“The Bomber”) finish off another USA prospect in round 2. News of the government cuts has broken with money for the health service being reduced. Also with pathological concern for the money supply, further cutbacks are planned by the Treasury in raids on the current year’s department’s expenditure. Only defence spending is safe under this Conservative government. The Fete today had a fancy dress contest and races for the children; crazy golf; pony rides, bowls wellie throwing and countless raffles and competitions with most village organisations represented.
