With our wind-breaks and deck chairs on Great Yarmouth Beach August 1984

Start of a weekend outing and stay at The Burlington Hotel, Great Yarmouth, an afternoon on the beach and evening in the amusement park

Up early and after our morning drinks and breakfast, we load up the Jaguar as Daniella wakes restlessly. We decide to put her in the back of the second Escort Estate and took off to deliver it to my parents in Stanton. Daniella sleeps soundly but we arrive just in time to give the hungry girl a big feed. My parents are very pleased with the car, Mum tries it out (back and front) to sit in and Dad joins me for a trial run. After a chat, off towards the seaside. East on the A143 via Beccles and Diss, stopping at a roadside pub for drinks and a cheese/bread lunch. Eventually to North Drive, Great Yarmouth, and we arrive at the Burlington Hotel by 1.30pm and are shown to a nice room at the front of the hotel – number 29.

We have a view of the sand and sea, a double bed, two bunk beds, a cot and tidy but small bathroom en suite. Daniel and I watch the Olympics on TV as Diana unpacks and sets out the room and gets us a cup of tea. After, we walk out onto the beach and I hire three deck chairs and two wind breaks and set them out near the sea, just above the high water mark. The day is sunny with a cool breeze but the water is warm as we paddle through the rather stony backwash. Debbie loves the waves and jumps over the big ones by holding the hands of Daniel and I. Daniel is still feeling his cold and is feeling chilly and my cough gradually improves. Diana and Daniella rest quietly and have constant drinks to keep them cool. At the end of the afternoon we walk back to the hotel and fed the baby and I catch up on the Olympics. Off together for a walk to the nearby amusement park and all manner of rides on the snail, the cars and the amusements at 10p each. I look after the baby and let the others enjoy themselves before we walk across to the row of cafes and restaurants and eat at the Marine Café, portions each of hamburgers and chips. Back to the Burlington well satisfied and tired and all to bed. I have difficulty sleeping and keep Diana awake.
