After a fitful night of pain and discomfort, I returned to Hinchingbrooke Hospital and was seen quite soon by a much more competent doctor and nurse than the other visits who noted the reddening of the foot around the wound and decided to start me on a course of antibiotics such that I was able to work for long periods of rest with my foot up.
The main news today was of the historical release after 27 years in prison, of Nelson Mandela, the jailed African National Congress leader. Freda has now discussed the idea with Mum and still plans to come to live in East Anglia
I slept reasonably well but this was a bit fitful as it was difficult to get into a comfortable position without hurting my foot. I was awoken with my morning tea and felt all right but when I tried to get up, my foot was hurting as much as a couple of days ago and I appear to have had a setback. As soon as I could get washed and dressed, we went along to Hinchingbrooke Hospital and arrived at 10.00am, which was earlier than the Sunday rush. I was seen quite soon by a much more competent doctor and nurse than the other visits. I was able to explain my problems and fears and was much reassured. The doctor noted the reddening of the foot around the wound and decided to start me on a course of antibiotics to head off an infection in the early stages. It was re-dressed and we came home.

Today, I worked with long periods of rest with my foot up, but I also managed to attend to my personal press cuttings and other matters to as to be able to say that I had achieved something with my time. I was pleased that my foot also seemed to be more comfortable and I was relieved at that. The main news today was of the historical release after 27 years in prison, of Nelson Mandela, the jailed African National Congress leader. This was done in the manner of strict control by the security forces but there was still a tumultuous welcome from thousands of his followers. He went to the city to address hundreds of thousands more and will be travelling back to Soweto tomorrow. The whole thing is a security nightmare with threats from the fascists to kill him if they get the chance as they see him as being very dangerous in potentially leading the black people to a just and multiracial democratic society. I heard from Freda today that she still plans to come to live in East Anglia and has now discussed the idea with Mum as well. I hope that she has thought this move through and will not blow hot and cold on the prospect and thus upset Mum.
