Leaving Berney Arms late but just in time to get under the Bure bridges but stopping in  Yarmouth before cruising home to Horning.

John Major's authority over his Conservative party is waning as his Welsh Secretary and fellow cabinet minister John Redwood decided to stand against him in his "confidence" leadership election.

Slept well after our meal in the pub the previous night and then slept in as my organiser alarm failed to sound.

The problem was that the sound had been turned off.

This made us very late for getting under the Bure bridges and we had to get quickly under way and even then had to power against the incoming flood tide across Breydon Water and shoot the bridges with that same tide following.

Wiggly was very good and worked well as a crew member and we did have the consolation of finding a mooring space at the public quay in Great Yarmouth.

After securing the boat, we took the walk into the town centre with Sam and Wiggly did some more clothes shopping in the warmth of the day.

A little trouble with Sam as he fouled in the road; our quick early-morning walk not having satisfied this need fully!

The morning thus preoccupied and a nice period on the pier in the sunshine and out of the breeze, drinking pints at the special discount price of 99p. I also bought us a mixed bag of seafood and we shared this as a snack in place of tea.

The boat trip back up the Bure, stopping off at St Bennett's Abbey to walk Sam. He managed to find two hares in separate fields but stopped on the whistle and did not chase them.

Once back, I performed a near-perfect manoeuvre to get The Paxton Princess into the boat-shed and then we moored up there for the evening, ready to leave the following day.

I decided to take Wiggly to the cinema in Norwich where we saw Rob Roy; for the second time in my case but the first for her.

It was just as good the second time and very moving eve though the plot was a bit silly with the "goodies" winning against all of the odds.

For our tea, we just had a large bucket of pop-corn which we ate noisily throughout the performance.

Back to the boat without stopping for a drink this time and tired to bed. I had been suffering with a really sore rib-cage after bruising and straining it at the front having previously hurt it by falling on it two weeks ago at the back.

John Major's authority over his Conservative party is waning as his Welsh Secretary and fellow cabinet minister John Redwood decided to stand him in his "confidence" leadership election.

Now supporters of Michael Heseltine and Michael Portillo are scheming to make space for their candidates in the second ballot by voting for Redwood or abstaining in this first ballot.

John Major's whole scheme has backfired as I always thought it would. In my book, the idea had been put in his mind by a political opponent anyway
