I decided to spend most of the day working through my backlog of newspaper cuttings and did not go out, except to tend the ducks and the doves. The rain fell incessantly in a steady drizzle which made the fact palatable and it was quite cold as well, with an east wind to boot. I also watched a televised football match (Arsenal versus Manchester United) were the waterlogged pitch cramped any style and resulted in a dour 11 draw. The news was full of Gorbachev’s visit to Ireland and of the government’s embarrassment over the Harrods takeover publicity
