We started canvassing today in Little Paxton with an acceptable response on a fine and bright but cold day without Michael, due to sickness, but with Peter While to help this morning and Percy Meyer and Des Merrill this afternoon. Taking Daniel later for a driving lesson concentrating on steering and control. Forty people have died over the rejection of the new regime in violent clashes in Namibia and 15 to 30,000 people protest in Scotland against the poll tax, whilst writs and injunctions fly over the report into the Harrods takeover.
Another bright and fine day but much colder and the forecast is for rain and wind to come soon. The start of canvassing in our election campaign. Michael was still sick and so I took over the responsibility of organising the day. I prepared canvas packs and badges we met at Michael’s at 9.30 for 10.00am. Just Peter While helped me this morning, but Percy Meyer and Des Merrill to help this afternoon. We made a start in Little Paxton and had quite an acceptable response on a par with my experiences of last year, which was a good start. I took Daniel for a driving lesson this evening when I had become free and concentrated on the steering and control of the car which improved as a result.

This evening, I sat with Diana in the lounge watching the film, ‘Fatal Attraction’ which I found to be an appalling mixture of sex and violence I was glad to have sheltered Daniel from. I also went through one week of back newspaper cuttings which is a very humble start on the backlog. The news was of violence in Namibia as 40 die in clashes in protest about the new regime to take over from South Africa. By unhappy coincidence, Margaret Thatcher was playing a brief visit there. An amazing trial of strength has developed over the business of publishing confidential copies of the report into the Harrods takeover. There is to be a Downing Street meeting between Thatcher and Lord young over the writs and injunctions that have been flying about. There has been a major demonstration in protest in Scotland over the introduction there of the poll tax. 15 to 30,000 people were involved.
