Freda and Alf were staying ahead of the funeral tomorrow and we welcomed Mum for a visit and prepared the place for the funeral reception but Mum was still being vague about her future. The whole of the East German Politburo has resigned en masse and former members are arrested for misdeeds, parties in Czechoslovakia differ over the Cabinet membership and, off Malta, a storm blows up and strands President Bush on a battleship
I slept well and laid in until nearly 8am with Di until Della came in and disturbed us, wondering where her morning drink had got to. Di prepared a superb fried breakfast with good choice and quantity of goodies for all. After this, I took Freda and Alf for a look around the gardens and, as they set off for a walk to the shops for a newspaper, Derek Giles arrived and I spared him the time to chat about his first problems and ideas of the job of being the new Eaton Socon town councillor. I passed the time socially for much of the day, with another nice lunch and tea until we set up the house for the funeral reception tomorrow.

Having prepared for the visit of our relations, we first welcomed Mum and then Freda and Alf and the rest of the day in grief and reminiscing
A preparation day for our visit relatives. We decided early in the day that Debbie was too ill to go horse riding and would have to stay at home. I organised the house and was ready for Mum’s arrival in late morning. She came into the kitchen and had morning coffee with us. We had just finished lunch when Freda and Alf phoned from the station having arrived early from Cornwall. I collected them and came back to Mum in the family. A long afternoon during which Mum went through her full cycle of emotions and ended up by being a bit difficult by the time she was collected and returned to Weald House. We sat for the rest of the evening chatting about Mum and Dad and our family upbringing. Thus late to bed.

To my Aunt Doris Antrobus’s funeral today and to collect Dad’s old car from Stanton afterwards on an emotional day which ended quite restful. Mikal Gorbachev met Pope John Paul II and established relationships between the Vatican and the USSR as the Eastern European revolutions continue apace
I was awake at 7am for another busy day. Out with Diana in our Ford Escort car to the funeral of my aunt, Doris Antrobus. It was a long drive to the Great Yarmouth/Gorleston Crematorium and we were a little late but still arrived in time for the service. Nobody, except the vicar and us seemed to be singing and I found the crematorium service a bit low key. We went back to Doris’s old house in Ormesby St Margaret for the reception afterwards and met many relatives – including three of Mum’s sisters for whom I arranged to transport to Paxton for Monday. I do not think that many of the rest of them will come then. We came home via Stanton, where we collected Dad’s car and left ours in the garage.
