Frustrating office morning at Comart and then by train for Byte Shop London afternoon after news on The Lady as Clive is knighted and Kenneth Baker returns to ministerial duties
Another bright sunny day with a cool breeze. Up and to the office for a frustrating morning encountering production and quality problems. A straightforward mail but irate customer (soon placated) from the Channel Islands who was upset by debt recovery leading from poor sales administration. Meetings with John about C10 software policy and support issues; Derek Morgan about disk drive supplies and printed circuit quality problems and Derek Weatherby about credit control.

Long day of Xitan and Byte Shop meetings and then home with John Lamb by car
A long day of meetings with John, Geoff and Derek Weatherby to agree Budgets and plans for the new Xitan Systems and Southampton Byte Shop. First a visit to Cumberland Place and established the need for a better meeting room which I quickly organised at the Park Hotel. Firm decisions on the roles of existing personnel, creation of 15 jobs, leasing of new premises for Xitan,

Back to work at Comart office and then off to Southampton on Mum’s birthday for a series of Xitan and Byte Shop meetings
To the office early, arriving before 8.00am so as to prepare myself for the day’s business. Review meeting with John to discuss a range of support and marketing issues such as technical change notifications and software training for staff and customers. Also the plans for phasing out distribution of Tecmar and Cromemco – a process that I fear will take at least three months. Review of mail to familiarise myself with events and then to sign cheques for group expenses and import payment transfers. Talks with Derek Morgan to obtain brief for an Industrial Tribunal and advice from Roger Brittain to enlist the services of a new Cambridge firm of Solicitors in that connection. Meeting with Derek Weatherby and a Job Specification agreed for a London Byte Shop Administrator.

More bad political news following Thatcher's re-election but developments on The Lady and then a problem visit to Mum, who is depressed about wheelchair-bound
A fine sunny day with a cool breeze keeping the temperature nice. First in bed with morning mug of tea studying the Sunday Times. Much comment in papers and on Radio about the Thatcher cabinet changes and the unfairness of the electoral system. It seems that Whitelaw’s peerage is a hereditary Viscount-ship, the first hereditary title since 1964. Also that there is now a possible majority on a House of Commons free vote for the restoration of the death penalty. At least Whitelaw managed to get Leon Brittain in place of Norman Tebbit to the Home Office and so it may not happen.

General Election aftermath with Thatcher rewarding her followers with high office, now being unfettered, but the Royal Family enjoy the Trouping of the Colour on HM The Queen's Official Birthday
We rise late following the late-night election vigil on Friday morning and Daniel and I clean out the ducks. The ducklings have ventured out for the first time and eat & drink freely. Two hours watching the televised Trouping of the Colour ceremony as today is the Queen’s Official Birthday; then lunch at The Little Chef on the way to Cambridge where the city is busy with degree ceremonies and car parks full.
