Some close supervision of our children today, with Daniel now expected to do 2 ¼ hrs homework nightly and Debbie taken horse-riding on a dry day after a cold night when the builders had completed the foundation for the new wall and were bricklaying again and then Diana and I had spent our customary day in Bedford and we heard of terrorist incidents in Jordon and The Lebanon and Ulster but the main news was of Reagan seeming to lose his stand against South African sanctions, as Thatcher’s ally, because an 80% Congress vote stands to rule out his veto.
A cold night, but we slept well until the dawn of a misty morning. Washed and shaved ready for breakfast and it was boiled egg this morning. Out to the doves and soon the builders had arrived. Yesterday they had completed the demolition and laid the foundations and today they laid some bricks, although far fewer than I had expected. Took Di to Bedford today for our normal Friday shopping expedition. Set off in the Escort and, after our traditional coffee (orange juice and biscuits for Della), went our different ways. To Peacocks and a quick look round the auction.

Another dry day spent between monitoring the children, with their meals and homework, and then the builders who have demolished my garden wall for re-building whilst I was still stripping the paint from windows and doors and re-painting them. This as Norma arrived for lunch, the East-West arms agreement should limit Greenham Common missiles and eliminate the need for Molesworth at all but the SDP/Alliance parties are at odds over the outcome. Bad industrial news as Thatcher’s stooge, Graham Day, sacks Rover Group’s long term Chairman Harold Musgrove and the pound falls to a new low and trade figures are terrible
Slept OK and awoke on time to my morning tea. Showered, shaved and dressed and still time to check out the children’s rooms before breakfast. Croissants for the children, but they were not available to me because of our diet. I made do with another bowl of wheat flakes. Out to the doves and the weather continues fine still. At 8.30am sharp the builders arrived and were soon followed by a large delivery of bricks. Then a skip and soon the lads were demolishing the wall, brick-by-brick.

More house decorating today and then clearing up afterwards ready for the builder to start making garden walls tomorrow before quality time with the kids, helping Daniel with his homework, reading to Debbie and noting Della also having a friend round to play today. Ulster police in trouble over fatal ‘rubber bullet’ killing, TSB state sell-off hopelessly oversubscribed and more trouble in South Africa as Winnie Mandela addresses the grieving Kinross mine mourners with claims of poor mine safety for blacks
Slept well, even though it was quite warm in my bedroom. Up on time to my morning tea, then showered and shaved before my breakfast of wheat flakes. A different brand to Jordans and it seems that this type is becoming quite popular. Weighed 13st 11 lbs on the scales this morning, which is 4lbs less than when I started slimming. Already my trousers fit much more comfortably. There was a misty rain in the air this morning and none of the fog that was forecast. Went out to feed the doves and then went straight into the decorating again.

A fine and busy day for me working on my investments, taking Di to the new Cambridge Grafton centre, and then returning to carry on painting and helping Daniel with his homework and reassuring Debbie a Diana hosts her friends overlooking the sunny riverside gardens. East/West arms control still heading the news with the LibDems narrowly coming out for a non-nuclear defence policy and sporting expulsions dominate the back pages
A reasonable night and awoke to my morning tea on a misty morning. Showered and shaved, also washing my hair, and once dressed, walked out to take the morning air. It was very mild for the time of year, and still. Caught up with Daniel and got him to clear up very untidy room and then we all enjoyed a boiled duck egg (except Diana) with toast fingers to dip in. Daniel and Debbie to school and I worked at my desk for a while, sorting the pile of papers and reconciling my bank and credit card accounts.
