To St Neots for a tax planning meeting with Roger Brittain as Diana went shopping before lunch at The Little Chef before collecting and planting some replacement shrubs for those lost last winter. The US/Russian row over expulsion of Soviet ‘diplomats’ from the UN simmers on but still Shevardnadze arrives in Washington for East/West arms talks and The Stockholm Security conference agrees a formula for arms verification as the French terrorist bombings continue and UK unemployment tips 3 ¼ million again
Slept OK and was called a bit later than usual, as Di let the kids catch up on a bit of sleep, lost with last night’s fair visit. Dressed in sports jacket and trousers, ready for my trip to the accountants this morning, but got down to breakfast a full 20 mins late to find the family gone. Read today’s paper without finding much news. As Di walked the girls to Debbie’s school, I read today’s mail and prepared things for the trip, then we all set off in Di’s car. Parked by the Co-op, so that Di could get her shopping early, and I went on to the Post Office and posted a host of letters from my correspondence session yesterday.

The whole day on my investments and financial plans after some DIY repairs and before taking the children to the Kimbolton ‘Statty Fair’ as the French bombings continue, black mining casualties fail to get treated in ‘whites-only’ South African hospitals and the Americans and Russians still make ‘tit-for-tat- moves over the spying allegations
A good night and slept in a little too, to become quite relaxed. Found Di to cut my hair first and then washed it and showered before breakfast, but made myself rather late to the table. Out to the doves and then settled to fixing the leak in the bath. The screw junction at the bath outflow was the answer and I re-seated it to make the fix. Then, to the office and spent the whole of the day working on correspondence and bill payments. First, phoned my stockbroker and accountant and worked out my financial plans.

A swift start to a cooler day to save my back pain and then to Cambridge with Diana for coffee with her parents and lunch at The Copper Kettle and then some investment decisions as the stock exchange plunged again. Ballet and then The Country Companion for Debbie, as I study the news and hear of the poor European compromise over sanctions against South Africa as 13 die and hundreds are missing after an underground gold mine fire in the Transvaal
A better night, waking for only a while before settling back to sleep. Awoken with my morning tea and got up straight after, to save further wear and tear on my back whilst trying to sit in bed. Showered and dressed, ready for breakfast and down in time to check the children’s rooms. We had the heating on downstairs today, as it was cold this morning, but the sun was out when I took Della out to feed the doves. Di came back from taking Debbie to school and called me to the car and we drove to Cambridge to do some shopping.

Problems with my cold and back on the coldest September day since the 1950s as Marshalls visits to demonstrate the new Range Rover Vogue, Debbie starts Brownies as a trial and a new explosion hits the Paris Police HQ but Austin-Rover are still losing money
An appalling night, awake for much of it through my cold and bad back. I felt warm with the full weight of the bedclothes and only slept in the early hours when I had removed most of them. Awoken to my morning tea and reluctant to leave yesterday’s papers that I was reading when called for my shower and breakfast. A meal of wheat flakes, before completing my ablutions and dressing in sports jacket and trousers. A little time to read today’s papers and then, before I had got into my paperwork, the car salesman, Mr Pinch, from Marshalls of Bedford, arrived with a new Range Rover Vogue for us to try out.
