Sunny weather leading to boating congestion through The Paper Mill Lock as I divide the day between researching my stock exchange investments and painting my garage as Reagan makes some arms control offers with the Daniloff row continuing, David Owen addresses the LibDem conference on arms control and Thatcher’s stooge now seems set on closing BL’s Cowley works as her latest assault on British manufacturing industry
An unsettled night, but slept eventually. Arose early to shower and shave, and then dressed in time for breakfast with the others of wheat flakes. The children had failed to tidy their rooms, as usual. Out to feed the doves, who fed well, as I watched the line of cruisers opposite, stranded by the congestion on the river last night. The early dusk and sunny afternoon had brought the boats out in droves, then lured them into complacency over the amount of daylight left for them to get back to St Neots.

Typical Sunday with an English breakfast and a Roast Beef lunch as I carried on working on the garage and then putting The Blue Peter dinghy away for the winter as both Daniel and Debbie had friends round to visit them. Nigel Mansell wins the Portuguese Grand prix today and the East/West talks creep towards a positive conclusion but English football is in trouble again after yesterday’s violence at the Bradford vs Leeds match
A rather restless night, as first I was too hot and then too cold! Awoke first and, to avoid the customary argument, decided to make the morning drinks. Sat in bed with Di supping her coffee and reading the Bedfordshire magazine and me writing yesterday’s journal. There is a good piece in the former about Shefford and its 11th October fairs, which we will remember well from our time living there at 24 Northbridge Street. Showered, shaved and the only one dressed (besides Di) for our Sunday breakfast of fried egg, bread and bacon. As we finished and I was reading the paper, a young girl knocked to play with Deborah, then Steve arrived to spend the day with Daniel and Linda’s boyfriend turned up to collect Emma’s clothes that were left here the other day.

Inspecting the Hayling View gardens, buying materials and painting the outer garage doors whilst also visiting the St Ives auction viewing on a pleasantly warm day before an evening with Diana to the pictures to watch ‘The Colour People’ epic film as the east/West arms and security talks drag on
A better night and up in time to shower and shave for breakfast. Read the paper as the children were attended to. I now weigh 13st 12lb, a loss of 3 lbs since my maximum and feel much better for it. To the doves but, although the sun was up, it was still cool and misty and so they did not want to feed yet. Let the ducks out early and they fed hungrily, but only laid 5 eggs. The riverside gardens are looking more open now, but there are still a number of trunks to remove and the ground is very uneven. Locked up the home and then, after scanning today’s mail, set off in the Escort Estate for St Ives.

A trip to Bedford and Marshalls to hear of their offer for my Jaguar and price for a Range Rover in exchange And then back to spend time on the outer garage door before taking Debbie horse-riding after a party for Della and then suprising Daniel by letting Claire and Heather in to knock on Daniel’s bedroom door without warning. 39 Gordon road was sold for £42,995 today and USSR Foreign Minister, Shevardnadze, met his opposite number and was then whisked away by an unscheduled invitation to visit President Reagan
A little restless last night, but, although I did not think it amounted to much, it was enough to frighten Di off to the spare bedroom. Awoke to my morning tea, with a slightly sore back again. It was better until I went on the dodgems with Debbie and Dan at the Kimbolton Statute Fair the other day. Showered and dressed ready for a breakfast of toast and traditional marmalade, which I enjoyed. Time to read the paper and then review the mail, but Di was agitating to leave early for Bedford. Still managed to feed the doves and talk to the gardener, but then I had to go. Drove to Marshalls outside Bedford and, after making a fuss about the visitors parking places being full with salesmen’s cars, left the Jaguar for an examination.
