The whole family awake early at the beginning of a busy day with Daniel off to school for an Applied Maths test and the rest of us driving to Bedford in the Rolls-Royce to collect the Range Rover after its service and repairs. A little time left to work on the conservatory guttering before a family lunch at the Sandy Happy Eater before off to Kimbolton School for the ‘Autumn Fayre’ this evening, re-fixing some shower room tiles before my journal and to bed. Thatcher refuses to accept defeat over the IRA extradition despite widespread European opposition
We were all awake very early this morning having planned lots of things to do. Myself down to breakfast after Diana and the girls had already eaten but Daniel had yet to arrive. He had to go to school this morning for an Applied Maths test; but the rest of us were first going to Bedford. I drove them in the Rolls-Royce and then stayed in the car with Della whilst Diana took Debbie to have a passport photographs taken in one of those automatic booths. Then we went to Marshalls in the Goldington Road (the time still before 8:30am) to collect the Range Rover. I let Di have that to take the girls swimming whilst I drove the Rolls-Royce home, stopping off at Alec Norman garages to ask after the exhaust part that I have needed to order for ages. At least the Range Rover is running well now:

Monitoring the building work again after another slow start on a very cold day with slight rain after which I fitted some alarm contacts and security bolts to the new doors this afternoon. Then we drop the Range Rover off to Bedford for a service and ordered a Christmas tree on our way back. A multiple collision blocked the A1 today such that Di had to use the swollen Hail Weston Ford to get home before she joined me for a St Neots History Society social evening. Five Russian robbers flew a hijacked airliner to Israel today. Following the extradition impasse, there were strong exchanges between Thatcher and the Belgian and Irish prime ministers. Another US space shuttle is launched today with spy satellites aboard.
After being called late, I woke slowly this morning to start with and was the last to the breakfast table and had I not finished my wheat flakes before the carpenter arrived. He finished off the doors and glazing this morning and then built a sloping roof onto the pump house this afternoon. The bricklayer was back laying the planting beds boundary today and capping it with coping stones. He also laid the two missing bricks and then rendered and made good the floor areas which were missed by the floor-layers. The plumber/electrician and mate were also here, finishing the electrics and most of the pipework for the heating system. I got down to some work this afternoon, fitting the alarm contacts and security bolts to the new doors. We had dropped the Range Rover off to Bedford earlier for service and modification to use ‘leadfree’ petrol and then came back via Eaton Socon to order a Christmas tree from The Garden Centre by the River.

Supervising the builders after a slow start today and then talking to the Parish Council about my contributions to the evening’s meeting to be made whilst I would be mainly elsewhere at the HDC Consultative Committee until nearly the end after which I attended a nice social event at the Parish Chairman’s house this evening with mince pies and sherry being served Thatcher was continuing her row with Belgium/Ireland representatives at the Common Market Summit in Rhodes
I had an unsettled night with Diana thrashing about, affected by her bad cold, I therefore slept in a bit this morning and was late down to breakfast. I was still in the bathroom when first the Carpenter arrived to fit the lounge/conservatory door frame and when Michael Pope telephoned with a local planning query. I spent some time today supervising the builders: The plumber/electricians were working on the main pump and heating pipes for the conservatory pond and the bricklayer came this afternoon to form the pump house walls.
