The campus at the UEA
The campus at the UEA

Our visit to Mum in Stanton today coincided with the visits of the district nurse and home help, Doris, so Daniel and I just had 15mins to see her before I had to take him on to his UEA university visit which gave him a good impression.

I drove on to Heronshaw at Horning to check on my new place and then to Brundall to view our possible next boat if its bridge clearance would suit it to the Great Ouse. Home in the rain and dark, with snow and sleet forecast, to find Debbie with the ‘flu as I started my Christmas Card campaign.

An IRA attack on a NI checkpoint kills two soldiers and maimed another and the Vietnamese boat people campaign against being repatriated from Hong Kong. Opinion polls show Labour well in the lead over the Tories

This was a long day, which I started in the normal way but, after breakfast, we loaded up the Range Rover with some things and set off eastwards. We arrived Mum’s house in Stanton for a visit but found the district nurse just giving mum her first bath since coming home. Then home help, Doris, arrived and. by the time I’d finished making the drinks. Daniel and I only had quarter of an hour before it was time to leave. The rest of the journey then to Norwich, where I dropped Daniel off his interview with the University of East Anglia. A large but mature campus but he feels that it looks a good place to work and study.

I drove on to Heronshaw at Horning, stopping to have a snack lunch at McDonald’s on the way. Heronshaw was pretty damp and dismal on a cold and wet day, but I checked that everything was okay and delivered two old vacuum cleaners that we had finished with at home. I locked up and set off for Brundall to see the boats for sale at the Norfolk yacht agency. I found an interesting 37’ x 10’ 6-inch boat, new in 1988, that could be our boat for the future. A pity at an estimated 8 ft 6ins bridge clearance, that it might not go under Offord Bridge otherwise it would be perfect in every respect. The congested road back to the UEA but I found Daniel there and he had experienced a good visit and likes the place very much. I think it will be his first-choice university as it is an area that he likes too.

The journey home was a little difficult in the rain and dark, but we arrived at 6pm to enjoy an omelette for tea. Debbie has the ‘flu and I fear it is not long before we all have it. This evening I sat, rested and watched a film and then planned my Christmas Card campaign. I bought plain ones and will now be able to choose any central wording that I like.  The news is of an army checkpoint being attacked by terrorist gunmen in Northern Ireland; Two soldiers are dead and another injured seriously. The Vietnamese boat people in Hong Kong are demonstrating against repatriation as the row continues. Opinion polls show Labour well in the lead over the Tories with the minor parties down to 4% only. Sleet and snow is forecast to add to the our misery of cold and possible flu.
