Della was now settled at end of first week in hospital a I spent some time with her and then returned with Debbie as there was no play leader on this day. Today started frosty and had me worried about the damage to Heronshaw and the Paxton Princess but ended up milder, windier and wetter which was a relief.
The Government's Autumn Statement which was aimed to have sufficient public spending sweeteners to please the electorate whilst not being too generous for fear of upsetting the city.
Today marked the end of one week for Della in hospital and by now she was settling into a routine and being very relaxed about it. It was Diana's turn to go along early to see her and I stayed at home for the early part of the morning. Debbie had to make her own way to the bus stop and then I cleared up and got some letters ready for posting. The conservatory is a nice refuge on these occasions, and I was feeding the fish and watering the plants when Bill Medlock came by and we chatted about Della and the garden for a while. Then I went into see Della as there was no play activity leader today and it fell to me to keep her entertained this morning in the playroom.

Della's Consultant Visit and consultation at the hospital with our concerns and queries answered by the Senior Orthopaedic Houseman. A large swelling of new bone tissue would form around the fracture and that the splinters of dead bone would soften and dissolve.
Then home for a little time to myself after which Debbie arrived on the school bus now diverted from ever stopping in Gordon Road. Later to the hospital on Guy Fawkes night and sat with Della as she went off to sleep and relaxed without the aid of any painkillers or relaxants for the first time
We approached today with some expectation and apprehension as we had asked to see Mr Vaughan-Lane to discuss the results of Della's X-Rays. Diana woke me up at 6.30am and we discussed things before she went off to see Della at the hospital. I took Debbie to the bus stop when we were ready and then drove on to join Diana and we waited for the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to come round. He did so eventually at about 10.00am and had his senior Orthopaedic Houseman, Dr Kuaseman with him and an assistant. Diana and I were hoping for a detailed chat with him, but he had a manner that would be received my most as reassuring but we felt was rather dismissive. He said that things were going all right and that we had nothing to worry about; that the bone would heal easily with no loss of function or performance. She would be riding again within six months.

On a wet, windy and quite cold day, there was mounting concern over Della's Traction after an X-ray showed the two slanting surfaces of her broken thigh bone too compressed for knitting together.
Della had a change of scenery this morning and was wheeled into the playroom where the activity supervisor got her to do some cutting out and sticking with the other children. Debbie sat in with Della later as Di and I went to the parents evening at the Prep Department in Kimbolton where we were given time in preference to the other parents to discuss Della.
I had got to bed by about 11.30 in the end and slept until 7.00am when Diana woke me with a start for my morning tea. There had been no call last night and so Diana had slept through and then read my note about how Della had fared and so was quite relaxed about things. She drove off to the hospital and arrived before Della woke up and I got showered and shaved ready to face the day. Di had already combed Debbie's hair and encouraged her to get right ready for school. I had breakfast with Debbie and then drove her to the bus stop as she had lots of bags to carry.

The first settled night and full comfortable day for Della on my 44th Birthday during which we also took Debbie to her horse riding as well as attending Della. Pat Law had kindly baked my cake and we enjoyed it at the hospital together. I took Di to the Brampton Garden Centre for lunch and a break from all this
I slept well after getting to bed so late and then woke up at around 7.30am and got started for the day. Di had left a message to say that she had not been called in the night and had gone in at 6.00am which meant that Della had slept her first complete night. I took Debbie a morning drink of orange juice and then the telephone rang to say that her cross-country riding event had been cancelled due to the recent rain making the course too slippery.
