Leaving Della to be looked after by Di as I set off for my Thormaid Estate in the Scottish Highlands after a foot appointment with Mr Sewell at The Cromwell Clinic. This consultant had also looked in on Della which was reassuring. The drive to Birmingham Airport, the plane to Wick, changing at Aberdeen on to the Gulfstream G1 and meeting Nigel for the drive to Thurso for the night.
I awoke a little early and spoke briefly to Diana who was agitated over firstly the setting of Della's leg and then the fact of my leaving for Scotland for a few days. After she left for the hospital, I had a frantic time packing my things for Scotland; Boots, jumpers, clothes etc and also my files and things that I would need for the discussions with Fountain Forestry. I got to the hospital for 9.45am and, moving Della down to the playroom, went down with Diana for a coffee and chat. She was more relaxed but still worried when she went home for the morning as I stayed on with Della. I was there the whole morning except the time I went along to see Mr Sewell, another orthopaedic consultant, for a private appointment in the Huntingdon Cromwell Clinic.

A very full day, reassuring Debbie whose tummy-ache had to be overcome, clearing up and preparing for my Scottish trip and coping with a worrying day with Della's traction which had been readjusted and was causing pain.
I also attended a full HDC Council Meeting and then give history talk to the Kimbolton History Society in the State Room at Kimbolton Castle
I was called by Diana before she went to the hospital and then got up to have breakfast with Debbie who claimed a tummy-ache. She did not want to go to school and Diana would have happily allowed her to stay home but I bribed her with 50p sweetie money to "be brave" and she cheered up to go along after all. I then moved to get my office cleared up and to prepare for my Scottish trip and, this started, I then had to rush along to a full meeting of the Huntingdonshire District Council.

As the weather has turned wet and stormy and now gets cold, we were waiting for news of Della's X-rays after she had been much more comfortable in recent days. Council colleague Terry Hayward was also admitted to the same hospital with a heart attack, and I sent him a ‘get-well’ message. I faxed Nigel Smith later after he left a message about our planned Scottish trip.
The news is of John Major and Douglas Hurd frantically negotiating with the rest of the EEC over aspects of greater European unity when their own party is split down the middle!
I had a rather unsettled night. Della was slower to go off to sleep that in previous nights and then, once home, I had trouble getting comfortable in bed. I was also awake early this morning before Diana brought my tea and then I was still in bed when Debbie pronounced breakfast of crumpets ready and I went down in my dressing gown to eat. I waited for Di to come home but there was no sign of her by late morning and I wondered whether she was staying there for Della's X-Ray and Doctor's visit but she was only shopping. I made calls to the Committee Clerk's office of the District Council and sorted out this forthcoming week's Southern Area Agenda after our meeting last night.

After a late start to the day, and taking Debbie to the bus stop, I took advantage of Di staying at Hinchingbrooke, and this left me the chance to get on with some important correspondence. Di returned later after Della’s care had been taken after by the Holly Ward play leader.
I then stayed with Della all afternoon into the evening hoping for the X-Ray result as I also caught up with HDC papers and then chaired a LibDem HDC group meeting at Sally Guinee’s house before getting back to see Della at bedtime to relieve Di.
I had a lay in this morning and then regretted it as I had to get ready quickly in time to take Debbie to the bus stop. Then Di was at Hinchingbrooke and so this left me the chance to get on with some important correspondence and I ended up with a heap of envelopes for posting. Some telephone calls to follow and I resolved the following matters: Arrangements for the trip to Scotland with Nigel; registration transfer for the Reliant van; and several other matters. This took most of the morning by which time Diana returned having left Della in the care of the play leader of the children's ward.
