With the strong wind and tide, we decided the weather was too unsettled to go to Fritton Lake and so we set off and made Burgh Castle before lunch in order to eat in the Waveney Inn carvery. Then some fishing, games on the lawn and a chance to phone my Dad who remains in constant pain. The noble efforts of the dockers end today with the collapse of the dock strike and England lose the fourth Test to Australia and the players plan a tour of South Africa in defiance of the administrators
We woke this morning to rain and a strong wind which, with the tide, made navigation difficult. We watched several sailing and motor cruisers struggling before we decided what to do. The weather was to unsettled to go to Fritton Lake and so we set off and made Burgh Castle (St Peter) before lunch. We had a nice lunch in the carvery and then Daniel managed to start his engine and was in his seventh heaven for the rest of the day. We had a swim this afternoon and then tea in the boat.

The girls did a bit of fishing with me and we caught three eels, a perch and roach before craft arriving at the marina churned the water up too much. We also played football and catching on the short grass by the centre and I walked up to the church and had a look around. My attempts to phone home and monitor my answering machine drew a blank – the bleeper seemed not to work– but I phoned my dad who was still in constant pain but is to see his family doctor soon. They are struggling on and hope for an improvement.
The news today is of the end of the Dock Strike with the unions throwing in the towel. It was a symbolic struggle that was destined to fail. The England Test cricket team have lost the Fourth Test ignominiously to Australia with Gower’s captaincy in doubt. Also, a rebel tour of South Africa is on the cards with Mike Gatting due to skipper a mercenary side. The gulf between players and administrators widens as a cavern. We have a week or so left on this holiday and we are enjoying ourselves. The weather cheered up later today, the sun came out and the wind dropped.
