The sun warmed the scene after another cold and frosty night as I worked on my conservatory pond link bridge and a disabled access ramp for the house. I took Della to the stables in hope of a riding lesson for her but Fiona failed to show and so I completed work on the access ramp ready for Mum’s access and then fitted our newly-altered winter cover on to The Lady. The news is still all about Czechoslovakia
This was another very frosty night and cold morning, blessed only by the sun that was to warm us later on. I decided to work on the ramps and bridges today, but first had to take Della to the stables with Debbie in the hope that she would get a riding lesson. We waited in the freezing cold until 10am but then had to give up as Fiona did not come.

After another poor night worrying about Dad’s funeral arrangements, I welcomed Mum’s visit with Della’s help and then had coffee with Di after which I picked up Debbie and Daniel then arrived from school such that we all had lunch together. Once Mum had returned to Weald House, we went to the Little Paxton November Fayre which raised Village Hall and local charity funds.
This evening planning a conservatory bridge and house access ramp. Dubcek has slated the USSR and former regimes for putting down past reforms and Thatcher’s popularity is at rock bottom with Hazeltine threatening her leadership.
I had another poor night tossing and turning whilst thinking about the demise of my Dad and dealing with the aftermath. This followed a late bedtime which did not help. I fed the fish and backflushed the pond filter after breakfast and there was only Daniella with me when Mum arrived. We exchanged news and condolence sentiments from the cards that had arrived here and at Weald House and we had quite a tearful session as far as Mum was concerned. We also went into a few aspects of the administration with the aid of her filing case and sorted some things out. Then coffee at which point Di arrived and we had a nice chat to brighten things up.

After a better night sleep I drove to St Neots to register dad’s death but managed to give the registrar the wrong date of birth which caused a stir later. After taking Di to lunch we called Weald House where mum had sorted out dad’s clothes for disposal. Once home I met the Rev Peter Lewis whilst collecting Debbie from school who had drafted the funeral service for me to type up and get printed.
The Communist leadership of Czechoslovakia resigned today and the new leader is announced as Karel Urbanek whilst the previously-exiled leader Alexander Dubcek addressed a crowd of 250,000 in Prague and calls on his compatriots to unite to improve their country. In the US, Bush meets Thatcher and they express agreement over the need to keep NATO alive and backbencher Sir Anthony Meyer is to oppose her in a leadership election despite the calls by loyalists not to do so
I had a better night after I had taken a hot water bottle to bed with me. This morning, I was quite rested and chased Diana unsuccessfully around the bed before giving in gracefully and getting washed and dressed for breakfast. A meal of toast and then, this morning, I prepared the information and drove into St Neots to register the death of Dad. This involved a long wait as the registration service does not seem to have caught up with the population expansion of the St Neots District. I then managed to make a mistake by giving the registrar the wrong birthdate for dad! I gave the date of registration of his birth but not the date of birth itself!

This evening this evening I went by car to a meeting with the senior officers of the Huntingdon District Police to discuss Little Paxton policing. The news is dominated by the row amongst the Tory party is to Thatcher being challenged by a stalking horse for the Conservative leadership. More demonstrations in Czechoslovakia (300,000 in Prague) but the army pledged to defend communism
I was up late and so tired this morning. I was ready in time for breakfast in my pyjamas and then dressed for the mornings visitors.
