The day almost entirely spent generating the LibDem FOCUS election copy for five candidates in Eaton Socon and three in Priory Park which was quite a business and so I had Sally, Percy and Derek helping me in the end. This was interrupted by me attending a HDC Contract Services Committee, which was a complete waste of time.
John Major made an important speech in Germany today where he says that Britain should be at the heart of Europe in direct contrast to the former Thatcherite beliefs
I was up at a reasonable time but took breakfast and saw the girls off to school before settling down to my work. I had several visitors today; bringing copy for our FOCUS election copy and taking away the latest versions for further study. The entire day was taken up with this process. I had designed the town council election leaflets as having an election story on the front page, the biographies of the candidates across the centre pages and the "Dear Neighbour" letters on the back. This, supplemented with a two-sided District Council insert in the middle. To produce this for five candidates in Eaton Socon and three in Priory Park was quite a business. In the evening, I was getting increasingly-anxious about finishing the task off and so had Sally, Percy and Derek helping me.

Della was organised, and Daniel and Angela visited later, but Debbie struggled to recognise Mothers Day until I helped. I was preoccupied with Election FOCUS work and had a visitor accordingly but relaxed watching some televised sport later after all the recent stress and excitement before having an early night.
Large holiday company International Leisure together with its airline (the largest private one), has gone into Administration and, after the Ribble Valley defeat, the Tory government are being pressed for an early decision on the Poll Tax.
A little lay in this morning as Diana may have been hoping for me to go and get the drinks but I was still asleep. She cooked breakfast for us and was rather glum waiting for us to recognise the day. Debbie was first to realise and she tried to hide the fact that she did not have a card. Della had made a beautiful card at school and gave it to Di with a present and then, as I had a card for Debbie that would do, she then gave it to Di who did not actually get to know that Debbie had forgotten.

Starting and ending the day very tired, I organised mostly successful Liberal Democrat meetings in St Neots and then Cambridge where I chaired a constituency campaign meeting which was well-attended and quite productive until the candidate Sue Sutton intervened. Arguments with Diana then followed delaying our visit to Mum in Stanton on the eve of Mother’s Day.
I was still dead tired today but had to keep going to ensure the success of a couple of campaign meetings. I was still up fairly early and carried on preparing text and copy for the first of these two. I got to Avenue Road with this information and then all of our candidates joined us for an information and training session. Sally Guinee went through the sequence of what was involved being a Liberal Democrat candidate and then I added flesh to the bone and gave details of the literature plans and time-scales of the election campaign. Percy was chairing the meeting as Michael was away, and Rob Williams, the agent, made sure that the candidates had all signed their forms to consent to serve etc. Home to leave Percy taking their photographs and then I worked on to prepare for this afternoon's meeting in Cambridge.

A meal with Nigel and Lynne at "The Racehorse" in Catworth after a tiring and busy day working on Council and campaign matters, sharing the place with the successful local football club fund-raising event
I was understandably very tired this morning and regretting, to a certain extent, going to last night's event. I was up and dressed a little slowly and to my office even slower still. The morning was disrupted by the need to go and see an old lady in Lakefield Close about a neighbourly noise problem and I did this. I had to get back home by later in the morning to receive Sally and Michael, who had come to type in some copy for FOCUS and they used my portable computer whilst I carried on with some other work on the MAC. They stayed until lunch and then I carried on working on my own in the afternoon. Achieved some success, but there was much work to do and I was tired and concerned about the coming weekend deadline with my plan being to have draft copy to show a meeting of candidates on Saturday morning.
