On this Red Nose day, when £10m was raised for charity, Diana was out this morning at a "Beauty Parlour" and Daniel arrived with Angela and will stay the weekend as I visited Cambridge with colleagues folding and preparing LibDem FOCUS batches for distribution.
The US are struggling with their Soviet arms negotiations and are active in Iraq over the use by Sadam Hussein of Helicopters to put down unrest.
I was due to go to Cambridge this morning to complete the FOCUS production, but first I had to finish off some of the artwork that I was working on last night. I was awake at 6.00am and caught Diana still in bed which was a nice surprise! I had enough energy afterwards to quickly get up and dressed and then get into my office for a couple of hours' work on the computer. I completed the format of the "Out" slips, ending up with mixed versions on a single A4 artwork sheet so that both target wards could be dealt with in a single print run. Then I attempted some window bill designs and changed those for the posters to include the proper agent's imprint which is more important during election campaigns.

Almost the entire day spent on Election Artwork, checking it with colleagues Michael, Derek and others before finalising it. I learnt that my printing was finished but that I would have to arrange for its folding the next day in Cambridge. The latest opinion polls have the Liberal Democrats climbing back to levels of nearly 20% which was very heartening
I spent the entire day laying out the remaining election artwork. The main task was the "Out" slip - a printed piece of paper that is left when a canvasser calls and has missed meeting a voter. It is used to publicise the fact that we have called, to seek their support and to explain on whose behalf we were calling. The public are always poor at understanding the difference between a Town, District and County Council election and, furthermore, when two of these elections take place at the same time and they have two voting slips (and the right to cast a multiple number of votes on one of them) this becomes even more confusing. I was struggling for the right formula for much of the day and got Michael, Derek and others round to have a look at it before deciding on a design that had all of the candidates’ names in a representation of how they would appear on the ballot papers.

The morning after a very busy day, equally occupied catching up with administrative matters and also spending time in the conservatory becoming alarmed at the biggest infestation of black-fly and green-fly yet on the hibiscus. This evening, progressing my local election campaigns.
Today felt very much like the morning after the night before and I had lots of catching up to do and not much chance of doing it. The main problem was the financial planning and accounts that had not been attended to in recent times. I gathered together all of my receipts and statements and then paid outstanding bills before reconciling my Abbey National and VISA accounts. I discovered that there was a deficit in my cheque account, and this then triggered a flurry of transfers and transactions that took me into St Neots to bring them back into balance. A new action list and sequence of priorities, a few letters and other items of correspondence, and then the inevitable filing to try to bring my affairs back to some sort of normality.

My normal Tuesday visit to Cambridge Visit to see her parents at Eadon Lilley's for de-caffeinated coffee with Diana but also for some election and administrative chores as well as working with Dr John Mathhewman. Lunch at the Little Chef and home to install my new switcher which can now receive fax transmissions. This evening chasing colleagues and catching up with my journal.
Late to bed but a very good night as I slept better than for some time. This was no doubt due to having finished the election artwork after much worry on that score. Up at a reasonable time this morning and, after breakfast and before setting off for Cambridge, I looked into the new telephone-line switcher that I had bought to see if I could install it in my office. The machine is supposed to intercept calls and turn on the FAX or answering machine as necessary to save having a separate telephone line dedicated to the FAX machine alone. I could see I was going to need a telephone extension line and so gave up the installation. I then loaded up the car for Cambridge with the election artwork to drop off, three toner cartridges to take back for re-filling, the Moss Bros suite to return, and my brief-case so as to be able to go and see Sue Sutton at Glisson Road.
