Driving early from Paxton to Horning to host the Heronshaw Planning Site Visit when, despite village councillors against, the District councillor was in favour and the North Norfolk and The Broads Authority Planning Officers calmly identified the actual planning issues and then recommended approval subject to a Section 106 Agreement.
This accomplished, and after mending the fence, I set off home and stopped for a snack lunch at Snetterton before calling in on Mum. She had quite enough of staying with Freda for the time being and being told me of the rows between Freda and Alf over Christmas about the money I am lending and giving them so that they worry however they are going to pay it back etc given their performance in managing the business in which I can only agree.
I received Mum's wishes over her will and drove home to do some writing this evening and then a fairly early night. The stock market has been recovering and the sterling coming off the bottom as the Governor of the Bank of England earns a future knighthood
I had a very poor night's sleep with my mind active over the problems of yesterday, the plans for today and further thoughts about Freda accommodating Mum at Redgrave. Awake early even then and layed with Diana for a while talking, until I moved myself and got ready to leave for Norfolk. I made good progress and drove on to Wroxham to use the public toilets and have morning coffee at Roy's Cafe whilst writing notes for this morning's site visit. Whilst waiting for the arrivals, I prepared the property by taking down the chains, opening the garage and gates and putting my car and that of my architect behind the garage to enlarge the plot and provide space for as many cars as possible.

A day concentrating on the problems and priorities of others as it started and ended with Michael Pope's resignation news and continued with the successful organisation of opposition to the wild Little Paxton development plans. This culminated with a successful village council meeting these plans were rejected and Police Inspector David Amps confirmed that constable Phil Moores is to be our village 'bobby'.
The conflict deepens in Georgia with a bloody stalemate as the President remains surrounded in his parliament bunker and problems after Israel expel Palestinian activists from the occupied West Bank. Stormy weather reported in the Highlands with severe gales and torrential rain: Hope my trees are all right!
I started out intending to balance today's activities between a number of competing priorities but was quickly dragged into a day of voluntary work. A bit slow to get started and was attending to the conservatory when the first call came through from Celia Chignell of the Citizen to sat that she had received Michael's press release and wanted me to comment. I briefed Percy and undertook to draft a press statement for our colleagues to approve and then was reviewing my priorities when the phone went again with another problem.

Trip to Old Warden on a fine and cool and not unpleasant morning for Di's Jackson and Fulton family New Year's Day traditional lunch and home via Shefford to see our old home. John Major's New Year's message all full of discredited claims of the economy now getting better and 30-year release of government papers shows MacMillan was facing much the same problems
The night was not long enough again as Diana was quite ruthless in getting us all up. To breakfast in my dressing gown after collecting the morning paper. There was no Financial Times on this New Year's Day but our faithful Eastern Daily Press put in its appearance. A little time to continue putting my journal in order for the end of the month and year and then we all got ready for the trip to Old Warden. In previous years some of Diana's older relatives had hired the National Trust Warden Abbey property there to welcome visiting relatives and friends on separate days but this year it was the village hall for a day to combine the two. We arrived a little later than most and then found some friendly faces there, although there were many that I did not know.
