Full day re-organising Comart and organising BMMG plans for CCTA Director and DTI Minister meetings as half a million miners strike and police clash with mass pickets but the Comart Group gets good coverage in trade journals
Up and on time to the office but, before I left, I took a call from John Lamb who is unfortunately ill with the complications of his persistent cold. A full day with longish meetings with Derek Weatherby reorganising the Accounts Department, Peter King reviewing his actions and workload, David Fear and Carlton have reconciling unit/sales forecasts with production requirements and a host of others. Several calls made on BMMG business setting in train arrangements for the forthcoming AGM and representative meetings with CCTA Director Paul Freeman and IT Minister Kenneth Baker.

Day reading my business mail and in-tray and resolving to reorganise the Comart Group after tending our productive ducks and taking Debbie for a walk around the village to see what is left of the Old Paxton Park as two more Libyan bombs are found in Manchester and Sussex Police pursue armed men who shot two officers and kidnapped two others as hostages
Another lay in and, following a fried breakfast, further reading of Sunday Times until 10.00am until up and out to release the ducks and clean them out. 10 eggs today which is not bad. Then I take Debbie for a walk to the slide and swings in the park and look around Little Paxton to see what is left of the old trees from Paxton Park. There are just a few in the old village area. Back and down to an hours work before a lunch of roast pork. Then after to return to work in the afternoon and evening. I have worked my way completely through my briefcase which is some going and concluded that I must reorganise the Comart group and recruit more senior management personnel. In fact, if I do not sell the company outright, a further option has emerged of selling a third of my holding for £1M.

Day relaxing with the family, watching films and reading Pepys Summer 1664 journal whilst I think deeply about my future plans for Comart and the BMMG as the serious press and even Thatcher’s Tory colleagues start questioning the wisdom of her abrasive policies and Gaddafi’s agents bomb the London businesses of his Libyan exiles
Another lay in reading The Times and Economist newspapers. I stay indoors after releasing the ducks and let Diana go out whilst I look after Debbie. Particular pleasure in putting out remains of a half coconut on the bird table for the Tits to feed upon. A fair time today reading Pepys 1664 Summer Journal which I have not been able to do for some little time. The radio news (What the Papers Say, the Week in Westminster etc) full of reported criticisms for the Prime Minister with Tory backbenchers Edward du Cann and Norman St John Stevens making coded criticisms in public speeches.

Day off taking family to Cambridge to upgrade Daniel’s BBC Micro and Diana’s Motherly shopping as I researched Little Paxton History and the garage fixed my Rover after which I play with Daniel and his new toy as the Miners’ Strike becomes National
Awake at the usual time but spent the time until 10.00am sitting in bed and reading business and current affaires papers. Except, of course, for a brief sojourn downstairs for my customary breakfast. Up and dressed eventually as the cleaning maid and builders workman had already arrived and then out with Diana and Debbie for a day trip for local and Cambridge shopping. No further, however, than Cosy Corner and St Neots Tool Hire before the slightly warm car engine refused to restart. Eventually a breakdown service arrives and we get the car to the garage for the rest of the day and take off for Cambridge in Diana’s mini metro.
