On the coldest winter since 1963 and another 7degC frost tonight, I hear the revelation that I was being treated with the wrong antibiotic for my urinary infection and then Debbie keels over with sickness to make domestic life even more difficult as Philippine rebels take over the government TV station, Marcos marines guarding the Presidential Palace are hemmed in by massed humanity but open fire and Reagan opposes Marcos. The UK government cuts Social Security increases, 8,000 Land Rover resist the foreign takeover and Head Teachers back school boycotts
A restless start to the night that soon dispatched Di to sleep in the lounge. She said I was continually scratching her legs with my toenails and prodding her in the ribs! I cannot honestly remember this, but I must have been restless. Awake to feel much cooler and did not have a temperature this morning. Daniel got ready for school and then came back again as he and Di had got the dates wrong! Managed to sit up in bed and read the FT in reasonable comfort, but still had a headache. Before lunch, Di came up and phoned the Doctor’s to make my appointment for Friday, but the results of the urine test were already to hand. It transpired that I had been diagnosed the wrong medicine and, in place of the antibiotic Septrin, I must now start on an anti-bacterial medicine – Negram.

Day of surviving my fever and further illness complications questioning my care but enjoying some time with Daniel later as the Philippines rebellion against the unfair election outcome gains momentum, the US offers a further medium range nuclear arms deal, Kinnock pledges to repeal Thatcher’s anti-union legislation and Ted Heath speaks out against the governments abandonment of any UK industrial strategy
Awake after a much better night, but still cold this morning. Survived by cuddling Di with her electric heat pad until I turfed her out at 6.30am for some fresh bottles. Sat in bed and read most of the Observer and then had lunch in bed, struggling gamely with the excessive gravy that Di had poured all over the pork and vegetables. In the end the obvious happened and I got it down my front. I really wander what diet you are supposed to have as a fever regime, as I am sure we are doing it wrong. The afternoon laid out in bed with temperature rising comme d’habitude.

Probably my worse night of illness, in a deep fever and wet with perspiration worrying about pneumonia taking hold with a bad cold adding to my discomfort whilst being prostrate and unable to leave my bed as the Philippine crisis deepens with the Army rebelling against Marcos and taking over the army and police HQ’s and Cory Aquino and her supporters hiding from repression but the Catholic church and civilians form a human wall to protect them from shelling
A very poor night. First my temperature rose to 102degF as I grew hotter during the evening and then, with Diana sleeping downstairs to avoid me, I woke at 1.00am to find my pyjama jacket actually wringing wet with perspiration. I found another and settled myself down, but was cowering in early morning, curled up and shivering until I eventually knocked up Diana to get me some fresh hot water bottles. Strange to see how I have been affected by this illness – it seems about a week since I was stricken with the urinary tract infection and I am as bad as ever.

Regressed back to bed again after a promising start but followed by a very badly organised visit to the doctor that ended up with me being left outside in the freezing cold dusk and then suffering headaches and feverish flushes as dumping of nuclear waste becomes a ‘hot’ issue, rape crimes will be treated more harshly, new terms for the takeover for British Leyland would still lead to more than 1.000 job losses, French trawler men die off of the Hebrides and more than 30,000 blacks demonstrate in Alexandra
A good night and woke in better condition than yesterday. But I still had a persistent cough and this perpetual headache. I tried resting with the light on and the curtain closed after breakfast, and also took a couple of Disprin, but could not shake it off. Sitting in bed this morning, caught up with yesterday’s journal and then read the paper by lunch. Mushroom soup, then I got up and washed, showered and shaved and dressed, readying to spend the afternoon quietly in the lounge and the trip to the Doctor.
