After a late-night watching Nick Faldo win the US Masters Golf, I was tired this morning but still did a round checking the flagboards and then took Debbie and her friend Helen Cranston to Offord and the stables where we did more horse-box training for Sundance for a hour or two. A last-minute book panic where they were missing a drawing and Des Merrill’s fax machine saved the day and that visit allowed us to talk election tactics and respond to some Tory tactics. This evening canvassing for Percy in Buckden where he might just lose without more canvassing. The dockers put off their strike to get further legal advice, the Chancellor is under pressure for a high interest and exchange rate policy and the stock exchange slides. Today was showery but thankfully fine later.
Last night, I stayed up much later than intended and watch the final round of the US Masters golf tournament to see Englishman Nick Faldo win the championship after the Scot last year. Tired this morning as a result. After breakfast, I did a round of the Little Paxton flagboards and re-seated one or two of them and then took Debbie and her friend Helen Cranston to Offord and the stables. I stayed with them for an hour or two and gave Sundance some more horse trailer training and made some practice even if I wore myself out in the process. Once home, I had a worrying call from my book printers to say that they were missing a line drawing with the print date tomorrow I opted to take the copy over to Des Merrill’s and uses facsimile machine to send it to the print. Whilst there, I advised Des on other postal vote routine and he had a number of people that qualify. He then showed me a couple of Tory letters attackers over local issues and this prompted a rush job on my part to get the counter letter off to the local papers and then get delivered urgently.

Back to a salad tea and then off this evening to Buckden to canvass for Percy were had also arranged for two chaps to help us. Mixed results and I think that he could lose by hundred votes if we cannot get some more canvassing done. Home for an 11pm bedtime as we have yet to get up early tomorrow morning for a big day. The news today is of a deferred decision by the unions over the question of a dock strike – they are reviewing the legal implications before phrasing a strike ballot form. The Chancellor has a rough ride today in giving evidence to the all-party Treasury committee. Evidence of mounting inflationary pressure with discontent over the use of continued and high interest and exchange rates is a most unpopular and unwise combination policy. The stock exchange continued its slide on the news. Today was showery but thankfully fine later on.
