A full day of canvassing, on a fine and sunny day, with five of us this morning, just Percy and I in the afternoon and then three of us this evening and the Offord and Buckden polling districts. I collected Daniel from school for a driving lesson and took many canvas cards to Moira Biggin’s house for processing. News today of a civil servant going berserk with a shotgun in Whitley Bay, a prison riot at Risley remand centre, and the murder of human rights campaigner, David Webster, in South Africa.
Although this was a bank holiday, I made the decision that our campaign should go on today and we covered a lot of ground and did ourselves some good in the process. There were six of us canvassing this morning; just Percy and I this afternoon, and then three of us again this evening. This meant some 20 hours of campaigning, which should have put us ahead in the Buckden and Offord Polling Districts. There were no Tories in evidence today, which was good. The weather started cloudy and misty, which kept the electors at home and off the coast roads. Later, it was warm and sunny and then cool tonight. At teatime, I drove over to collect Daniel from Kimbolton School and gave him a driving lesson on the way home. Tonight, I took a thick wad of canvas cards over to Moira Biggin’s house for processing and received a ream of yellow/gold paper in exchange.
I sat up quite late tonight, watching a nice episode of Miami Vice with Sheena Easton as a guest star; then wrote up my journal as I worked and listened to a recorded Gloria Gaynor concert. The news today was of items in line with the times. A maniac civil servant went berserk in Whitley Bay, killing one and injuring many more in shot gun attacks. The Risley Remand Centre was the scene of another prison riot with protesting inmates breaking prison officer’s fingers and taking over the place. In South Africa, a leading human rights campaigner, David Webster, was shot dead. He had led campaigns against the detention without trial of suspects.
