Jude’s Ferry to Ely aboard The Lady !***! on a colder and breezy day and some swimming as Thatcher brings vote on Hanging.
Back to earth with the news. Yesterday the mortgage rate was raised by a distressing 11/4% to 111/4%; Alliance candidates marched to parliament for a lobby for Proportional Representation, the Queen’s Speech offered more of the same at the State Opening of parliament; and England were eliminated from the Prudential World cricket cup by India.
Back on The Lady, the boat was quickly turned around and we set off for Isleham Lock. A colder day without sunshine and sporting a cool breeze but still comfortable enough. We draw back the sliding roof at Isleham Lock to pass safely through and this time the whole family take a peek at the trout farm alongside the lock. The roof stays back as we cruise with the wind behind us. !***! We arrive at Ely in mid-afternoon and after some shopping take the chance of a swimming session at Ely pool by taxi. We arrive back tired but happy to a quiet evening before watching the 9.00pm BBC television news in the normal poor Ely reception. Already the new Thatcher government are bringing forward a vote on Hanging. In Poland, The Pope is pulling few punches and meets both General Jarevelski and Lech Walenska in short order. His tour is now at an end.
