Getting back into organising my investments and industry affairs and appointments after a slow and painful start as a horrific Scottish rail accident claims the lives of 14 dead and the Miners suffer two High Court judgements
Another warm and restless night but at least I woke up without a headache. I was still feeling flushed, however, and took two paracetamol which put me in better shape. Daniel made the drinks and after, Diana the breakfast, and I was well enough to join the family at the table. After a wash and shave and then asked the girls to go down to the swings whilst I made some phone calls. I check on the telephone line and Executel terminal first and try to plan them both for tomorrow afternoon despite delays.
Then to call the Bank and discuss my investments with Brian George. He calls me back, confirms a 12% interest on the treasury deposits and tells me that I can improve on the National Savings Register British Funds commission rates via the Bank’s Stockbroker. Calls also from a consultant about a seminar (who I ask to write), Nigel Smith of the BMMG (who informs me of the DTI cutbacks on consultancy funding) and Roger Holmes of ICL to arrange a meeting on Thursday. A call also from NEDO to check dates for a MSX meeting in early September and I was able to put him onto sources of further technical information on those Japanese Standards. Interesting to see the level of contact I get before even preparing a notice of my address to my industry contacts.
Lunch in bed courtesy, again, of Diana and an afternoon in bed sorting out a £900K portfolio of Gilt Edged Stocks, reading the Jaguar Cars prospectus and watching the fourth day of the test match on television. Up after tea to watch the television news.
Details tonight of a horrific Scottish Railway accident with over 14 people dead and more critically injured on the Glasgow/Edinburgh railway line. Two High Court judgements are made against secondary picketing, and the South Wales miners pledge non-cooperation. Rain tonight for the first time in weeks.
