A practical day cleaning the Rolls Royce and then the Range Rover, staying at home with a ham salad as the family went out to lunch. Some time mending the kitchen door and then to rest and write this journal this evening. The US Air Force admits to shooting down an Iranian airliner, with 290 people on board, in a ‘target mistake’ as ships in the Gulf flee after clashes with Iranian gunboats and Britain’s airports experience huge delays as they now lack summer holiday capacity
Awoke in the middle of the night to find Diana not having her period for a change. Laid in this morning and did not have my special fried breakfast until after 8.00am. Went out to clean the cars all morning. First the Rolls Royce and then the Range Rover – vacuumed, sponged, rinsed and leathered. Ran out of time this morning, so that I could not get everything away, change clothes, and lock the house up in time to join the family for their trip out to lunch. I stayed at home and made myself a ham salad instead. Rested a while after lunch. The rain had started to fall after a fine morning. Then I leathered the Range Rover down again (as Di had been out in it) and carried on mending the kitchen door.

Della’s Party - Some time working on the Lady today ceiling some fuel and calling hose leaks and reconnecting the heating system after a winter layoff before setting up a bouncy castle, chairs and a slide for Della’s party later for which the rain just managed to stay away. This evening I returned bouncy castle and drove past the old: building was looking very sad with the lawns unkempt. A car bomb explodes outside a sports stadium in Johannesburg South Africa killing two people, and Wimbledon is in full swing
Slept soundly after a fairly late night, but then got going quite reasonably this morning. Prevailed upon Di to make me some more French toast for my morning meal and then went out to work on my boat for a change. I had the floorboards up and used the bilge pump and a bucket of warm soapy water to clean out the bilges all over. Once achieved, I tended to a few problems. I tightened up the fuel lead that was leaking diesel, then the cooling hose that was leaking water and then reconnected the cold & hot water systems that the boatyard had disconnected over winter. Broke off to set up the ‘Bouncy Castle’ which was delivered and set out the chairs and slide for Della’s party later.

A slow start to the day on a fine morning with light showers after yesterday’s thunderstorm which continued with an appointment with Dr Osborne our dentist for an examination, then coffee at Tooks and home for lunch. Sometime this afternoon printing out some 30 letters about Redlands and then delivering them by bike before working on the Lady later as Di took the Brownies on the butterfly walk as I went to history lecture about Britain’s furniture store. The USSR conference agrees plans for reform, London police crackdown on another London drug ring and we plan Daniella’s birthday party tomorrow.
Another month, but the activities are the same. Was slow to rise, slower to shower and shave and slower still to breakfast, which I ended up eating on my own. A fine morning, with light showers after yesterday’s thunderstorm. Spent time reading the newspaper and morning mail quickly and then out with Diana and Della to St Neots for a 9.00am appointment with Dr Osborne, our dentist, for an examination. No problems for either Di or me, but we both have to have an appointment with the hygienist to clean off some scale etc. Coffee at Tooks after and I do not like the rather strong coffee there, though it is like nectar to Di’s caffeine addiction. I tried to get my hair cut after, but, after waiting a half hour with an increasingly restless Daniella, I walked out and did a little shopping instead. Once Diana had finished at the supermarket, we went home and it was soon time for lunch. This afternoon, I heard from Redlands and so I typed up a form letter to send to all of the affected villagers and then used mail-merge to individually address letters to them – some 30 odd in all. Then the task of delivering them and, Diana being out in the Range Rover, I took Daniel's bike and delivered them in that way, which was quite a surprise and talking point in the village.
