After very poor night of ill health, I was somewhat better this morning and fit enough for a walk to Holywell church and then to Needingworth for ice cream, milk and bread. The weather brightened a little for our cruise to the Pike and eel and on to the Twenty Pence Inn for the night after which the rain came! The children to bed on board and then Diana and I to the restaurant for a meal. News of huge air traffic control delays today with European holidaymakers hit worst and the Tories win Kensington narrowly in a by-election.
Had a very poor night. I was shivering, cold and achy when we went to bed with a hot water bottle at 8.00pm and then I was red hot and sweating all night as a result. I woke up several times in the night and was upset with Diana for not putting out some drinking water to refresh my thirst. This morning, I had lost most of the fever and was just suffering from the cold symptoms. After breakfast, I persuaded all the family to come with me for a walk, first to Holywell church and then on along the 1 mile road to Needingworth. There was not much there but a school, a post office and a newish village shop to replace an older one in a terrace of cottages now closed with permission for residential redevelopment. We did some shopping for milk and bread, then had an ice cream each and rested before we headed back. The weather started a bit chilly this morning, but it brightened up a little and stayed dry for our cruise to the Pike and Eel (where we had lunch in the Garden Room) and then for our cruise through Brownshill Staunch and Hermitage locks and on to our night-time mooring at the Twenty Pence Inn.

My cold started today, got steadily worse and I ended the day tired, achy and shivery. Even so, I struggled through my morning routine, joined the family for lunch at Tooks in St Ives High Street and then watched he family swim at St Ivo pool and then navigated The Lady downstream to The Ferry Boat In at Holywell where eel fisherman, Ton Arnold, and his men were reed cutting and stacking but had no success with their eel nets. Watching the Open Golf from Lytham St Annes and then an early night hoping for better health tomorrow.
A poor night, unsettled by the need for several trips to tend Daniella and marked by the emergence of the opening symptoms of my own cold. I also had trouble in getting comfortable with the confines of my sleeping bag and a sore back. This morning I was quite affected and hardly wanted to get up and dressed, having an obvious high temperature and headache into the bargain. I struggled through my washing and shaving routine in time to have breakfast with the family and then I went back to our cabin and laid on Diana’s bed whilst they went shopping. Read a little and suffered a lot. I then bravely struggled along to the Harvest Bakery (‘Tooks’) in St Ives High Street and we had lunch and then I struggled along, equally bravely, with the family who went swimming at the St Ivo Centre pool, whilst I watched.

After a night of heavy rain and noise from the neighbouring Huntingdon A604 by-pass, we set off in improving weather to the village of Houghton where we moored and enjoyed drinks and cakes at the little Millside Cottage guest house. Then cruising on via Hemingford to St Ives and a mooring at our favourite Waits Quay where we could rest and clean The Lady
A night of noise from nearby traffic on the A604 overpass, and from the nearby Huntingdon ring road. Also of torrential rain, which lasted all of the night. We slept in on a sombre morning, but at least the weather cleared up as we underwent our boating routine and had our breakfast. I decided that we would cruise on in the brightening weather, rather than hole up and walk to Huntingdon, and so we cast off and were soon enjoying some warm sunshine. We pulled in to Hartford Marina and took on water and I bought a new large ‘welcome’ mat and a new bailer for the dinghy. On again through Houghton Lock, after which we moored up and walked into the village. Supplies from the small supermarket and then we ate a lunch of sandwiches, drinks and cakes at the little ‘Millside Cottage’ guest house. £8.50 for 5 of us for lunch, which I rounded up to £10 for the good food and service which we enjoyed.

An enjoyable night at Godmanchester, with the children playing and me fishing before a misunderstanding with Di over coffee and cakes. Then cruising to Huntingdon where I attended a poorly-run HDC council meeting. Accounts of last night’s attack on a Greek cruise boat on the Aegean Ocean and all attempts to plug the leaking oil wells have so far been thwarted by the conditions and wind direction
Quite a good night’s sleep, though I did have to get up and make myself comfortable after getting myself ‘wound up’ in my sleeping bag with the zip underneath. Our normal morning routine, made easier by the warmth of the morning sun, which was with us for much of the day. We called Daniel and Gary in for breakfast and enjoyed our meal and then the girls played on the Godmanchester riverside playground, until we all went shopping. I did a bit of fishing with the girls and caught a half dozen bleak/small dace and was relieved of £1 for the Godmanchester Angling and Fish Preservation Society by a zealous official. At the shops we all bought a book each and then I got into a bit of a misunderstanding with Diana. She wanted to go to the coffee shop and I came back with Debbie to the boat.
