Working on my press cuttings and history consultation copies and regretting delays I getting my Rolls Royce Corniche before out with Percy this evening to secure more election support and help, completing the nominations that I needed. News of a right Royal skiing accident with The Prince of Wales narrowly avoiding death from an avalanche, his friends killed and badly injured and Princess of Wales and Duchess of York having falls whilst pregnant.
Was up on time this morning and ready for breakfast of croissants and fruit juice. After this, I read today’s mail and then the national and local newspapers. A steady job cutting out Little Paxton press cuttings for my scrap book. Di took Daniella to playschool this morning and then spent the day at home doing housework. I continued sorting out my history consultation copies and putting them in envelopes for distribution and also looking at the Exchange and Mart for registration numbers for the Reliant. Came across a few fairly anonymous ones cheaply, but felt that Percy justifies something a little better than that. Di was home for lunch and we were joined by her mother. We tried to chat over the meal, but Daniella kept trying to stop us! She must learn to give way to grownups when in company. Bad news this afternoon, as I found out that transfer delays meant that I could not collect the Rolls Royce Corniche tomorrow, which put me in a bad mood over tea. Got showered and changed for this evening’s efforts, but Percy arrived late after engaging a Buckden supporter who is to promote the rival SDP.
Two successful visits – first with Ian Gunn, local Parish Councillor, who signed my nomination form and also updated me on the range of issues the Parish are facing. Then off later to Mrs Ruff, who also signed and agreed to help with the old ladies that need polling day transport or help with a postal vote application. I also gave her a bound folder of the history chapters relating to village buildings and people for her to check through. Dropped off a number of envelopes and then came home at 9.30pm to further plan the campaign with Percy Meyer. At 10.15 I had a call from Alf Cousins, the Churchwarden and Parish Council Chairman, who also agreed to sign the form and supported my candidature. It’s all down to the campaign now. The major news story today is of the avalanche that engulfed the Prince of Wales and Royal skiing party at Klosters Switzerland. The Prince’s friend, 34 year old Major Hugh Lindsay, was killed and Mrs Charles Palmer-Tomkinson broke both legs, but the Prince narrowly escaped the deluge. They are cutting short the holiday after both the Princess of Wales and Duchess of York had skiing falls whilst pregnant. The Chancellor had to attempt denials today of a split with Mrs Thatcher on exchange rate policy, as confusion reigned and the matter was discussed in Cabinet. After another hectic day’s trading, the pound fell this time against the Deutschmark as the Bank of England intervened in Far East trading. The UK stock exchange has ended up, but a 50 point drop in Wall Street late today may be reflected in tomorrow’s markets in the UK.
