Biggleswade on a sunny day contrasting with the fog that caused a fatal accident in 1988

I was up early to overview the latest work of the builders, who did well setting the remaining coping stones around the pool but the plumber’s efforts were disastrous damaging alarm wires and achieving very little. I followed up by screwing down all of the floorboards and relaying the carpets. This evening to watch a wartime suspense film with Diana and watch the TV pictures of the dreadful foggy weather that had led to deaths and injuries on the roads today and hear of the record trade balance deficit which hit the flagging pound sterling.

I slept all right but woke up very early and so got showered and dressed early as well. I tidied my room a little to pass the time until breakfast and sorted out some papers concerning outstanding bills. The builders and plumbers arrived to work today and set the remaining coping stones around the edge of the pool and took all day to do it the plumber spent all day putting a couple of bends on the pipes did more damage than good. He put his auger bit of the drill through my alarm wires; and then chiselled a severed why are so short I could hardly connect it to repair the system. I was rather upset with him as it cost me at least two hours. At least I could connect the new alarm wire into the into the circuit whilst all of the floorboards were up. I also screwed down all of the floorboards today, relayed the carpets and was quite pleased about how well they went back.

I took all day to accomplish this and clear up and was very tired at the end of the exercise. The builders now plan to return tomorrow to screen the two floor sections which will be a great improvement. At the end of the day, I sat and watched war-time suspense film with Di which was quite exciting. The news today is of the dreadful, foggy weather which led to widespread road accidents throughout the country. Worst of all was right here, in Biggleswade, where many were injured and one driver died in a series of multiple pileups. News also of a terrible record trade balance deficit for the UK which sent interest rates up 1% to support the flagging pound. The stock exchange plunged 40 points as a result. More fog and frost forecast for the next few days.
