I slept very well and was a bit reluctant to wake up. Mum was even more so and did not rise until mid-morning. I took her up to the cemetery and we saw Dad’s grave and the flowers which still looked in good condition from a distance. Home for a nice lunch of turkey Vol-Au-Vents and a lazy afternoon watching the TV war film ‘A Bridge Too Far’ and also the King George VI Gold Cup where Desert Orchid, the legendary grey, overcome a huge handicap to still win by eight lengths over 3 miles.

After tea, I drove mum back to Stanton which went off without incident. She settled well back home and her neighbours were on hand to help.
