In Norwich in summer 1989
In Norwich in summer 1989

We had a a good enough first night aboard The Lady, with showers for Diana and I this morning before a walk to the city centre of Norwich and some shopping. Some films for our cameras, then lunch and a trip to see an Historical Craft Museum before setting off downstream for diesel and water and registering our boats after a Broads Authority Rangers reminded us! We moored at Rocklands Dyke, and went to for a walk until an overnight shower tested our boats windscreens and covers

I slept well enough after I had adjusted my bedclothes to avoid getting too warm. Diana had a shower this morning and I joined her having got it working for both of us. Everything on a boat forms the better for being use. Once we had breakfast and got the children washed and dressed, we took a walk into the city centre of Norwich and did some shopping. I took Dan and I went off with the girls we met up at a familiar lunch place at midday. I had been around the electrical shops and Daniel looking at the latest video and audio kit but buying done.

We just got some films for the camera and video camera and then a few odds and ends. A nice tuna fish salad sandwich and fresh strawberry cream tart to follow. We looked at a historical craft musing afterwards and enjoyed the displays before embarking and setting off downstream. We stopped for diesel and water above Brundall and then we got our temporary registrations at Broom’s after being questioned by the River Police! Then on to Rocklands Dyke when we moored in a ‘private mooring fee £1’ place like last time. . A trustee for the ‘Rockland Poor’ collected £1 mooring fee which were pleased to pay. We had salad sandwiches for tea and then die cleared up and put the girls to bed whilst I chatted to the wooden boat crew behind. The owners had been coming to the Broads for 30 years, bought this ex-Broom boat and got Broom’s to renovate it for them. He was beautifully varnished and looked very vulnerable on this river. Once Di was ready, we went for a walk to Claxton and saw the ruined remains of a castle. A quiet evening. I could catch no fish and we kept a weather eye out for maniacal hire boat helmsman. The Lady and Little Lady seem to be running well. The weather has been overcast and warm and dry but now there was a shower this evening to test out the boats. The new glass windscreen has been a boon and I fitted rubber doorstops so that they may be folded flat as well.
