Some time on Winterton beach on this day
Some time on Winterton beach on this day

A slow start on a very sunny and bright morning as I walked down to the phone box to call the Broadland Agency to hear that my offer for Heronshaw has been recommended to the owners. Off to West Somerton, stopping for drinks at Martham boatyard, and then walking to Winterton for a fish and chip lunch and afternoon on the beach before taking the bus back to Potter Heigham and then cruising on to Womack Water. The evening news was of the government’s difficulty over the level of Poll Tax and of an American air crash killing 130 people

I tried to get going early this morning, but it was a little while before we were setting out on Daniel’s boat during a very sunny and bright start to the day. I walked down to the telephone box at Potter Heigham and called the Broadland agency it seems that my offer of £105-110,000 is being recommended to the owners of Heronshaw and I must await a list of the inventory and the owners return from holiday in Scotland to progress the purchase, but it does look promising.

Then we were off to West Somerton along the dyke by Martham. Daniel was not very well today and so he rested in the cabin as I steered the boat. It was very hot today and the sun fearce and so we had the hood up for shade on the Little Lady. We stopped for morning drinks at Martham boatyard and then moored at West Somerton and walked to Winterton some 2 miles away. We had fish and chips for lunch, ice cream and drinks and then ventured onto the beach. It was cooler and fresher with an on-shore sea breeze. We stayed about 2 to 3 hours, built a sandcastle, rested and gathered a crab and starfish from the tide line before it was time to go. We had afternoon tea in the café and then took a bus from the village green back to the moorings and the Little Lady thence back to Potter Heigham. Daniel being tired, I left his boat strapped to the side of mine as we then cruised to Womack Water and moored there by mud weight as the moorings were full. I relaxed for the evening with the cockpit roof right back, reading today’s Eastern Daily Press and playing the keyboard with fingered chords. The little radio news we had today was of the latest government problems; the rail strikes will continue through the summer and now Ridley’s announcement on the levels of Poll Tax has led to Tory revolts and calls for his resignation. A serious aeroplane crash in America, has killed 130 people after an airline engine explode - d disabling the planes control hydraulics.
