Some work indoors on yet another warm and sunny day before the arrival of my huge conservatory de-humidifier and then the children come home with good school reports. Thatcher is alone in resisting EU reforms, more strikes are threatened and Soviet new nuclear submarine K-278 Komsomolets is stricken by fire off of Norway
A reluctant start to the day on yet another warm and sunny one. It has been a month or so since we had rain and at least it is forecast for tomorrow. Before returning to my press cuttings, I decided to do some adjustments on the conservatory doors. I changed the draw bolt positions and then the door hooks designed to hold the doors open. I had just done most of this, when a carrier arrived with my new de-humidifier. It is a large thing and came on a pallet with a weight of 80 kg. I offloaded it with the lorry driver and then unpacked it and put the heavy duty brackets on the wall and got Pete to lift it up onto them. I’m a bit distracted by the size and noise level of the machine, but it will be worthwhile if it can cope to the winter levels of condensation. At least being wall-mounted, it takes up no floor space.

It was after lunch that I could continue with the press cuttings and I combine this with watching the televised cricket. England fought well with the bat today but ended up in a losing position unless rain intervenes in England’s defence. By this evening, I had reached late April in the press cuttings and I will try to continue tomorrow. Daniel was at home today on ‘study leave’ and I ensured that he worked on his chemistry ahead of his re-take. Debbie heard today that she has won a school prize as the ‘best improver’s’ in her class. To bed a little late tonight but at least I am catching up with the backlog of work. The news today is of the European summit with its spectre of Thatcher disagreeing with the others and refusing to compromise. We are due another one-day rail strike next Wednesday and now the electrician’s union and voting to join them. Dockers leader, Ron Todd, makes a strong speech offering prolonged strikes if dockers are sacked during their present dispute. A Soviet nuclear submarine had a fire today off Norway in its reactor and we do not know whether to believe the Russians reports of no nuclear leaks.
